This is what 5 star hotels used to measure up to. The best of the best. Anyone can stay at the Four Seasons but arriving at the Willard means you are in on the secret. The rooms remind you of the Plaza or Waldorf in NYC. The service is impeccable and the suites they offer rival the best in the country. Having tea in the main hallway is an experience every woman should do once and ordering a bourbon at the Round Bar, the equivilant for men.

Staying at the Four Seasons means always having someone there to say 'Yes sir" or "Right away ma'am!". They know that the rooms are great and the beds heavenly but they also know that you come back for the service. The bar is also a great celebrity sighting spot so act like you fit in and order a drink.

There are several Ritz Carltons in the area, but only the Georgetown location stands out. It has a unique feel that makes you want to order a drink by the fireplace or simply go back to the bar and mingle with an overly friendly crowd. Sure any drink will do, but for some reason, you'll order champagne. Why not? If things go right, you'll be sitting down at their inviting registration area and getting a room....

Big hotels give you big rooms and big service. Small hotels give you unique rooms and personal service. This is the latter. You may have to find your own late night coffee or suffer a slow elevator ride, but the rooms are really nice, and the staff are there to help, albeit they usually don't have a ton of folks around. But with a location a block from the Capitol and Union Station, this place screams DC. Oh wait that scream came from Rock Creek Park! Where's Gary Condit?

The Hotel Monaco is the poster child of new boutique hotels. They have a hip restaurant and bar, lots of crazy art and unique rooms fit into a federal building that wasn't meant to be a hotel. The biggest complaint? You need breadcrumbs and an elevator ride to use the bathroom from the restaurant/bar. Why they haven't fixed this, we will never know...

The Mandarin Oriental does their best to provide a four-star experience, but they often miss the boat. The hotel staff sometimes seem confused and you have to ask for things, they aren't offered. And for some reason they located the hotel in a spot most locals couldn't drive their way to despite it being on the river. Oh well.
