When you are the oldest Irish pub in a city known for transition and short attention spans, you are doing something right. The same family has been pouring Guinesses at this Capitol Hill institution for over 30 years and the patrons love them for it. If there was a recipe for the perfect Irish pub, this would be it. They also stay open late, so they’re the perfect ‘last stop’ if you live on Capitol Hill. Oh, and the have a larger than average patio for daylight drinking (with sunglasses of course). We had more we wanted to say, but we drank a bit too much here on the last visit, so watch the video! Open Mon-Sat 7pm-2am; Sun 11am-12am

Over in the Courthouse neighborhood of Arlington, this modern Irish bar is home to Boston ex-pats and suburban happy hour lovers. They recently expanded, including a large non-smoking bar, so there is plenty of room. On Thursday nights, there are a lot of singles mingling, and on the weekends you can watch a game. We meet friends there to catch up, and some folks have been known to meet ‘sneaky’ hookups there since it is not the first place your friends will go. Watch out though, you could get caught.

Next door to the Dubliner, Irish Times has a hard time competing for best pub, since the Dubliner wins that drunken Irish brawl. But this places makes up for it in scandalous behavior. They have a late night dance floor in the basement that gets sweaty and you will definitely meet Miss or Mister Right Now here. However, they once had an Irish singer with a bad case of (we can’t even say it). We have never gotten past that. Throw your police patch behind the bar and start drinking and hopefully not driving. Fri-Sat 11:00am- 2:30am Sun-Thu 11:00am- 1:30am

We wish we lived in Old Town. We really do. Old Town is the greatest little town in America. And Murphy’s is the greatest Irish bar there. And they treat you great, and the drinks are good, and the people are good looking. But Old Town is so far away, and it is a really bad idea to drive there if drinking. We wish Old Town was closer to the city.

A new Capitol Hill establishment that is making new friends and serving the good ol’ drinks. This place is part of the new ‘8th street’ corridor where they took the blight of Capitol Hill and pushed it a couple more blocks east. Between bars, restaurants and pet stores, you’ll do okay on 8th street, SE on any night of the week.

There are two locations, one downtown and one in Crystal City. One of Sneaky Sunday’s best friends loves the Crystal City location, but every time we meet her there, we realize she is the only one. Crystal City just isn’t hopping. But we still love our Crystal City loving friend. The downtown location is a perfect after work drinking location, centrally located with outdoor seating and plenty of televisions for the big game. Open Mon 12am-1am, 11am-2am; Tue-Sat 11am-2am; Sun 11am-12am
