An amazing place to see a band, enjoy some soul food, and pick one of four floors or a roof deck to take it all in. It has all the trappings of a dive bar, with the elegance of your favorite New Orleans music haunt. The bands are usually jam happy, and the folks get up and dance. While many places claim institution status in DC, this is one place that backs it up. Open Mon 12am-2am, 5pm-2am; Tue-Thu 5pm-2am; Fri-Sat 5pm-3am; Sun 5pm-12am

You have to check the schedule, as 9:30 isn't open unless an act is playing, but the bands they get here are incredible given the intimacy of the venue. From Bob Dylan to Kings of Leon, from Ryan Adams to The Black Crowes. Great acts play small shows at the 9:30. Work tomorrow is going to be hell... Open Mon-Thu,Sun 7:30pm-12am; Fri-Sat 9pm-12am

This place is sneaky because the food and bar itself is below average and the band coming on usually looks strange, but once they start playing you wonder how the Grill was able to book them! Open Weekdays 11am-1am; Sat 10:30am-2am; Sun 10:30am-9pm

Located in a Bermuda triangle of Clarendon live music, Whitlow's often has a decent 'just out of the garage' band. The bar is spacious enough to allow the music to either be your background or the main attraction. Open Mon 12am-2am, 11am-2am; Tue-Fri 11am-2am; Sat 9am-2am; Sun 9am-12am

In Georgetown, there is a small bar where college bands and cover bands play with great zest. The people come from blocks around to hear these bands. It's also loud and small. That bar is Grog and Tankard.

Your mom used to tell you how Bob Seger played some gymnasium or ballroom when she was 18, and it was the best. Well, live it up like Mom did. The bands here bring their A games, the dance floor is literally a ballroom and there is a great upstairs deck for smoke breaks. Open Thu-Fri 5:30pm-2am
