Just through the back door of a bistro fit for a big city lurks an attached brick and wood bar with a bay view patio of its own. At lunchtime, the office army yuppies pack in and fill up on appetizers, only to return at night to get blitzed and blow on cigars from the bar's special menu. As the major place of dining and drinking on an island known for its high-priced crowd, Back Jack's and Jackson's combine for one of the most swanky nights out in the Bay.

A sprawling patio, tiki, and indoor and outdoor bars welcome folks seeking the ultimate Florida beach bar experience. It's where you can soak up a panorama as intoxicating as the bar's Rum Runner with a Bacardi 151 floater.

Whether you're partying with your friends on Finlandia Fridays or kicking back with the signature Blue Martini and playing see-and-be-seen with the beautiful people of Tampa Bay, you could do far worse than this sleek cobalt and black pleasure palace at the International Plaza. Ah, the Blue Martini, because in the end, the hype is right.

Gators is a huge hot spot, packed to the gills on weekends. It's more than a bar devoted to University of Florida's football team; it's a multi-level watering hole-restaurant that's local-friendly rather than touristy, and claims to have the "world's longest waterfront bar."

The first step outside will bring you under an overhang area that sports a couple of benches and chairs. An open space is used for concerts -- called "shows'' because of the intimacy of 30, not 30,000 -- that occur at least once a week. Farther outside, near the entrance, which doubles as an exit (crazy, huh?), is the main sitting area surrounded by a relaxing garden of green. Sierra Nevada was made for spots like this.

A staple of St. Pete watering holes. One of the few (non-beachside) places in town with plenty of outdoor seating, Limey's wide, wraparound porch and courtyard picnic tables make it a favorite among the St. Pete scenesters. For weeknight revelry or all-out debauchery, Limey's is always a good standby for passing the time with a pint on the porch.
