The Fillmore West not only consistently has some of the best music in town the place has got soul. From the “psychedelic” apples to the antique chandeliers to the incredible sound system to the free posters they hand out after shows, the Fillmore gives a nod to past traditions while looking ahead to the future of music. Bill Graham, the legendary music promoter who put on such Fillmore shows as The Grateful Dead, Cream and Janis Joplin, would be proud of what has become of this fine establishment. Now, if only they could make getting a drink easier. A Sneaky tip – arrive early or call ahead to reserve the best and only seats in the Fillmore on the wrap-around balcony.

Think of the GAMH as the little brother of the Fillmore, a tad shorter but just as good-looking and pleasant sounding. The Great American Music Hall is the place to showcase bands that haven’t quite made it to the Fillmore level on the popularity scale. If you’re lucky you can catch acts like Rufus Wainwright or Tift Merritt here before they move onto bigger venues. The intimate interior is darkly lit with ornate chandeliers and mahogany moldings. Like The Warfield and The Fillmore the neighborhood outside the GAMH is seedy, which only adds to the rock and roll experience, right?

With even more character than the crazies who roam Market Street outside, The Warfield is in a class by itself. Birthed as a popular vaudeville in the 1920’s, the Warfield has evolved into a world-renowned musical venue that strikes a perfect balance between big-time arena and small club. It’s intimate enough to afford a great view from even the cheapest seats in the balcony while large enough to attract some big-name acts such as The Verve or Ryan Adams. The music ranges from hard-core techno to petruli-fueled jam bands and tickets can sell out pretty quickly. The Warfield will be undergoing a renovation soon and many fingers are crossed that they don’t screw it up.
