Yuja Wang, piano Mondavi Center Presenting Program

PROGRAM NOTES Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is the earliest and the best-known ensemble of its kind in Asia, through which Chinese symphonic music has developed. Formed in 1879 as the Shanghai Public Band, it developed into an orchestra in 1907, and was renamed the Shanghai Municipal Council Symphony Orchestra in 1922. Notably under the baton of the Italian conductor Mario Paci, the orchestra promoted Western music and trained young Chinese talents in this style. It introduced the first Chinese orchestral work to Asian audiences and has been reputed as the “the best in the Far East.” Practically speaking, the history of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra may also be referred to as the history of China’s symphonic music development. Pianist Yuja Wang will be familiar to Mondavi Center orchestra fans who enjoyed her performance with the San Francisco Symphony in May, 2008. PROGRAM:
    • Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy

Sunday, 11/22 Movies on a Big Screen at The Guild Theater 2828 35th St, Sacramento 7:30 PM Admission: $5.00 Medicinal 101 In 1996, the legalization of medical marijuana was approved by the citizens of California through Prop 215, and the DEA has been at war with the clinics ever since. This is costing the taxpayers of California millions of dollars each year. "Medicinal 101" is a documentary which explores the issues that arise when state and federal laws onflict; primarily through examining raids of medical marijuana clinics in California. Features Joe Elford, Dennis Peron, Bruce Margolin, Ed Rosenthal, Jane Klein, Jon Gettman, Don Duncan and Michael Teague. The timing of this screening just happens to coincide with President Obama's loosening of federal enforcement of medical marijuana patients and their caregivers. Please note, last year we screened the precursor to this film. This is not the same documentary which we previously showed. Director Dan Frank is planning to be in attendance.
