  • The Remembrance of Things Past Book Club  Postal code 27587, United States

Image of The Remembrance of Things Past Book Club
Our meetup for October 11th was cancelled at the last minute, due to the death of my wife, Susan Gayle Neeley. Susan had been very sick for four years and while her death was not unexpected, it came more quickly than we thought. Therefore, we will continue the book we had planned to read, Crazy: A Father's Journey Through America's Mental Health Madness, by Pete Early. We will meet at The Storyteller's Book Store of Wake Forest at 3PM on November 8th. We usually begin with about a half hour of meet and greet and then discuss the book for an hour or so. Our reading is timely on both the national and local front. As health care reform reaches some sort of conclusion nationally, and mental health reform proceeds in NC, there is both opportunity and risk having to do with the availability of help for those suffering from mental illness. Mr. Early has become very active and sought after as a spokesman for these issues. Please join our core group of regular attendees. There is always room for more. We have copies in the store, 20% off list price for club attendees. Drew Bridges

    Alela Diane and Marissa Nader
    Monday, November 9, 2009 - 8:30 p.m.

To Be Still is the follow-up to Alela Diane's critically-acclaimed 2006 debut The Pirate's Gospel. That record brought the Nevada city, CA-reared musician a dedicated following across the globe (especially in Europe, where she recently finished a tour of mid-sized concert halls). Considering that early copies of The Pirate's Gospel were given away to friends in hand-sewn covers just a few years ago, this is not only quite a leap, but a well-deserved one. The core of Little Hells-- Marissa Nadler's elegiac and elegant fourth album-- is appropriately wedged in the middle: After moving alongside dual Wurlitzers and a theremin throughout opener "Heart Paper Lover", she slowly waltzing above a country quartet on "Rosary."
