In July 2005, GQ named the Rouge Burger its number four burger in America. We’re gonna one-up the men’s mag and say Rouge has the best damn burger anywhere, EVER. OK, maybe that’s a bit ostentatious, but it’s really freakin’ good, people. Topped with gruyere and caramelized onions, the Rouge burger epitomizes ground beef heaven. We should also mention Rouge has an impressive French-Asian menu, and serves up perfectly mixed cocktails. It’s def. a place we’d recommend for some mixing and mingling of your own.

On the same GQ list, Barclay Prime’s Kobe Sliders made numero five. So adjusting for the national scale of the magazine ranking, our taste buds figured, yep, it just makes good sense to rank Barclay’s Kobe sliders our number two burger stop in Philly. Of course, to verify their high standing, we conducted extensive taste-tests. Lucky us, right? Bring on the beef! While they may be mini, the sliders are huge on flavor. Plus, they’re Kobe (pronounced ko-ba) which sounds just as good rolling off the tongue as it tastes!

Daniel Stern’s latest New American culinary venture has foodies across the tri-state area lining up for a taste of the chef’s inventive takes on classic cuisine. Our Sneaky food reviewers agree, the infamous Rae burger may well be one of the most delicious – albeit simple – examples of Stern’s culinary creativity. This ‘standard’ 10 oz. ground sirloin burger is piled high with smoked bacon and aged cheddar, then garnished with an SG chop salad and avocado. Yep – that’s a salad atop a burger, folks. And in our book, that’s not only imaginative, it’s delicious! (Plus the salad wins us points for being healthy, right?)

We have spent many an hour bellied-up to the bar at Eulogy in Old City. Most of those times we’ve order the burger (topped with blue cheese and caramelized onions, in case you’re wondering). And guess what? We have never been let down. Paired with Belgian twice-fried fries and your choice of over 300 beers – well, let’s just say you may not need to eat for a week after. But it’s worth it. It does get crowded on weekends so get there a little early and try to score a seat at the bar or one of the 5 or 6 tables downstairs. The upstairs dining is charming, but there’s something about sitting amidst the hustle and bustle and chatting with the super-knowledgeable bartenders that adds to the fun of Eulogy.

Good Dog, great burger. For just $10, sink your teeth into a ½ lb. of house ground sirloin, stuffed with Roquefort and topped with caramelized onions, served on toasted brioche. Should you find yourself in the mood for a tasty burger on a Thursday, say around 8 p.m., pull up a stool for Quizzo, with Quizmaster Johnny Goodtimes.

Why the Standard Tap hasn’t gotten more attention for its kick-ass burgers, we don’t know. Because it’s “all the way out in Northern Liberties”? Quit your complaining and take a cab. Seriously, you’ll thank us. The Tap’s style is “old school pub meets non-pretentious hipster hangout.” And you can’t help but love it. The beers on tap are mostly local brews and the staffers hand-write the rotating menu on a chalk board above both the bars. If you’re not in the mood for a burger and the chicken pot pie is on the menu? Order that. You won’t be disappointed. A few other things that won’t disappoint: the outdoor rooftop deck, the jukebox packed with the best bands you’ve never heard of, and the prices (dare we say, “cheap”).
