  • Image of Haitian Folkloric Dance with Portsha Jefferson (Haitian Folkloric Dance with Portsha Jefferson)
This class introduces participants to the dance and rhythms of Haiti. Class begins with a thorough warm-up session, which conditions the body by developing strength, aerobic stamina, coordination and flexibility, followed by progressions across the floor. The second half of class is devoted to learning traditional dances (occasionally a song or two!) from Haiti as well as their historical and cultural context. Representing various nations such a Dahomey, Ibo, Nago and Kongo, each dance has it's own distinctive character, choreography and spirit. Expect a high energy class featuring spine undulating, shoulder shakin' dances in celebration of a rich spiritual tradition! ATTIRE: Wear what's comfortable! Portsha Jefferson began her dance training at the age of six at the Marsha Woody Dance Academy in Beaumont, Texas. Portsha has taught creative movement and Haitian dance in schools, community centers and studios for ten years. A passionate believer in education and youth development, she has worked for several organizations, including The Young Performers Theater, The San Francisco Arts Education Project, Westlake School of the Arts, Opera Piccola, Danceversity and Swivel Arts. Jefferson was a principal dancer and singer with Group Petit La Croix for seven years under the leadership of veteran dancer and educator Blanche Brown. She has performed Haitian dance with Bamboche, Reconnect Dance Ensemble, Ase Dance Theatre, Feets of Rhythm and most recently in Haiti with Compagnie Culturelle Des Arts. In addition, she has performed Afro-Cuban dance with Emese, along with Jose Francisco Barroso and Obakoso. Portsha's dedication and exploration of Haitian culture have brought her to Haiti, where she has traveled throughout the country to research regional dance, rhythms and musical traditions. Her concentration of study took place in Gonaives at Lakou Badjo, where Nago (Yoruba) traditions are preserved, and through religious ceremony at Tanp Souvenance Mistik, a Vodou community that celebrates it's Rada (ancient kingdom of Dahomey) heritage. She studied at Ecole Nationale Des Arts (ENARTS), Artcho and at Vivian Gauthier's School of Dance. Her teachers have included: Cadet Jean Evens, Ansy Daphnis, Metayer Frantz, Ramses Pierre, Dyron Napoles as well as independent study with Peniel Guerrier of Tamboula D' Haiti, and Daniel Brevil of Ayikodans Dance Company. Portsha is the founder and artistic director of Rara Tou Limen and Tou Limen Youth Ensemble. Currently, Portsha is an Artist-in-Residence in Oakland, Berkeley and SF public schools and a faculty instructor at East Bay Dance Center, Dance Mission Theater and Malonga Casquelord Center for the Arts. • Upcoming Seminars at the Center of Light beginning 11/21!  Postal code 94605, United States
    10:00 AM
Image of Upcoming Seminars at the Center of Light beginning 11/21!
Dear Friends, I want to alert you to different seminars that will begin on Saturday November 21st. I am teaching the first one and my Teacher, Father Peter Bowes will be in town from Chicago, teaching the subsequent ones. I know some of you have experienced what else we do at the Center of Light - I whole heartedly invite you to come and experience these. I pray this finds you well and as always, please contact me with any questions or to register. Prices are included in the seminar descriptions. Peace to you, Rev Rachel. Christian Mysticism Reverend Rachel Gonzalez Saturday, November 21 • 10A - 12P All who have sought to move beyond dogma and concepts into a direct experience of God and God's love are known as mystics. The word "mystical" refers to "a spiritual reality not apparent to the senses or intelligence ... stemming from direct communion with God." Feeling God, seeing God, and knowing God cannot be accomplished by belief alone. A direct, personal experience of God is what every mystic seeks to attain. A mystic meditates and prays and strives to be in close relationship with God throughout the day and throughout their life. Christian mysticism is the process of coming into the experience of God at the center of one's being, under the teachings of Jesus and Mother Mary. Deep in that holy place within, a mystic finds complete peace, joy, light, and love. Come to this seminar to learn how to go deeper and find out what your soul needs. Cost: $25 The Divine Feminine: Following Your Intuition Father Peter Bowes Friday, November 27 • 7:30 pm • $25 In Eastern philosophy, the feminine aspect represents the parts of ourselves that are intuitive and receptive in nature. In our Western society, these aspects are sometimes unknown, overlooked, and undervalued, as compared to the well-practiced masculine aspects of reasoning and logic. The divine feminine is an integral tool that each person (man or woman) has in order to make decisions, to access new ideas, and to create a life filled with wisdom, knowledge, and truth. This seminar will give you an experience of the workings of the divine feminine within yourself. The Purification of the Soul Father Peter Bowes Saturday, November 28 • 10 a.m. • $35 light lunch provided God made our souls perfect and beautiful. So why do they need purification? The experiences of many lifetimes have sullied the beauty and brightness of God's creation within us. Misconceptions and hurtful experiences have separated our consciousness from God's consciousness. Learn how to get back to the beauty and perfection of your own soul at this seminar with Father Peter Bowes, Priest and Master Teacher in the Mystical Christian Tradition.

  • Image of Ozumo Oakland Introduces a “Robata Experience” Prix Fixe Dinner Menu
Ozumo Restaurant in Oakland has announced the introduction of a “Robata Experience” five-course prix fixe dinner menu that includes a glass of wine or sake and is priced at $49.00 per person. The special menu is served only at the restaurant’s robata grill counter and is prepared by Executive Chef Yo Matsuzaki who custom designs the dining experience in consultation with each guest. Robata grills are a traditional way of preparing Japanese cuisine and Chef Matsuzaki is a master at this. Reservations are recommended but not required. Chef Matsuzaki is a graduate of the Peter Kump Culinary School and began his culinary career at Montrachet and then moved to Nobu Restaurant, both in New York City. His first job in California was at Rubicon in San Francisco. He has subsequently also worked at Farallon, Cityscape, and Sutra. Most recently, Matsuzaki was the Executive Chef at Ozumo San Francisco. Ozumo Oakland was opened last December by Jeremy Umland, Ozumo founder, managing partner and long time Japanese resident/professional baseball player turned entrepreneur. Umland is the culinary pioneer who opened Ozumo San Francisco in 2001 and, in doing so, introduced contemporary Japanese cuisine to the Unites States, bringing together under one roof a sushi bar, sake lounge and robata grill. The engaging décor at Ozumo Oakland, with an underling theme of water, air and earth, is the work of AGE Design of Japan, headed up by Ichiro Sato, one of Japan’s top interior designers. At the entrance to the restaurant is an oversized solid George Nakashima-style wood door with wood sidelites and a “live” edge. Highlights of the main dining room (seats 78) include earth tone slate floor tiles which extend up the walls and columns, custom oak wood tables and chairs and banquettes covered with traditional Japanese fabrics. Subdued lighting illuminates a second washi art work running the entire length of the west wall. The charcoal fired robata grill (seats 12), with a sunken kitchen area, is notable for its sustainably harvested ramon hard wood counter top. The adjacent Kotatsu Room (seats 24), available for nightly or private function dining, is walled off on two sides by clear glass panels with glass shelves lined with sake bottles. A 20’ tall Japanese paper lantern creates a dramatic interior backdrop and acts as a beacon to outside passersby. The centerpiece of this shoes-off, uniquely Japanese room is a 12' solid oak wood table surrounded by elevated bench seats. The Ozumo Oakland sake list, with over 90 brands, is one of, if not the most extensive in this country. The full bar serves signature cocktails such as the Giddy Geisha and Sumo-kaze, plus top wines from around the world and Sapporo and Kirin beer on tap. The bar is decorated with blackened metal and rich wood accents and a large waterfall with stylized leaping fish. A hand-troweled concrete floor embedded with a leaf motif is complemented by an expansive Japanese washi work of art, titled “Surge,” along the back wall. The cozy lounge has tatami mat bench seating with overstuffed pillows. The restaurant’s intimate sushi bar, topped with salt and pepper granite, also has a sunken kitchen area, allowing the standing chefs and seated diners to see eye to eye, separated by clear glass display cases filled with fresh sushi and sashimi selections, and illuminated by a ribbon of light coming from fixtures housed in a lower soffit. The Oakland location also has a private dining room, complete with sliding shoji screen doors, which seats up to 50 people, making it one of the foremost such non-hotel venues in the East Bay. The room has oak wood floors and soffits and is decorated with a washi art piece, “Blue Moon,” framed in by traditional Japanese textured stucco. Full-restaurant private lunches and off-site catering are specialties of the house.
