It's been our experience that the better the Mexican food, the dumpier the place. Rosa is the exception to the rule. It's upscale, but amazingly authentic. Everyone raves about the quac, which they make from a cart right at your table, and it always lives up to the hype. For some reason it's just not something you can duplicate at home. Great Mexican food is hard to find in this city, but Rosa is here to change that. Close your eyes and throw a dart at the menu. You'll be pleased. Mama treats you right because Mama knows what's best. Mama's margs will have you singing Mama say mama saw mumakusaw before you know it. She has a bountiful menu with highlights including stellar fajitas and enchiladas with various degrees of kick. Her guacamole doesn't quite live up to Rosa's, but it's still excellent. Mexican restaurants can tend to get too themey, and you may think that about Mama's at first, especially when a mariachi's all up in your mix, but when you let that go it's all in good fun.

This homespun Mexican hacienda is a legit go-to choice for Upper West Siders. If you're as big a queso fan as we are you've got to try the "Queso Fundida for Two" which is a fondue, Mexico-style. You really can't go wrong with melted cheese, can you? Everything we've tried here is top-notch. The margs and mojitos are full of the good stuff and will send you on your way. It's a great dining experience. You even get half-off your bill if you have a unibrow. That's a joke. Open Mon-Thu 12am-11pm; Sat 12am-12pm; Sun 12am-10pm

Step across the border for a nice night with friendly people and powerful flavors. They've got an airy, comfortable space with a nice outdoor dining area. Their traditional Mexican dishes are always made with fresh ingredients. Whether you're a vegetarian or a savage meat-eater like us, you're in a good place. It's also a good choice if you're just looking to share some appetizers and get your drink on. You'll end up staying for a while.
