This one can be listed #1 on the list for a few reasons: (1) its excellent quality coffee and pastries (2) while there are many excellent places for coffee on the UWS, this one's really the one that feels the most like a true coffeehouse - either in the grunge/colleigiate or eastern Europe tradition. Located near the Columbia campus, not far from the 1 subway stop at 110 St.

This is a coffeehouse in the Vienese tradition more than the Seattle spirit, and with a buoyant (spelling?) feel. Charming, with a variety of food on the menu, with dessert being particularly good. In the Lincoln Center area - good for post-concert.

A more subdued vibe than Cafe Mozart. Casual, slight European feel; a fine choice. Have never personally been rushed out by staff.

This is (1) a particularly good pick for dessert and coffee, rather than for a 'coffeehouse' feel, as its rather bright inside (2) the place made famous by Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks ("You've Got Mail") (3) possibly a little overhyped as a result, but still a fine pick for this category.
