Get rid of your chain-snobbery and judge it solely on the satisfaction that comes from biting into one of these juicy monsters. The 7 ounces aren't for amateurs and don't be afraid to take half home your first time. These were made for cowboys out on the open range, not hipsters in the urban jungle. They also make one helluva mean turkey burger if you're only sorta watching your weight. Another key selling point is the variety of toppings. Anything under the son. Buck up, cowboys and cowgirls.

Big, juicy, charcoal broiled fatboys is what's in store for you over at Big Nick's. The perfectly toasted buns make great handles for the goods. The 1/2 pound "Big Nick" is the way to go if you came to play, but there are plenty other choices if you aren't looking to go the distance. For you health nuts, go with the "Diet Bowl" - a burger on a bed of lettuce. The choices don't end. From the Grecian to the Hawaiian to the Phila Burger, it's a bodacious bonanza of burger...uhhhh...bodaciousness. Open 23/7.

It made the list because the original is so stellar. They're still working out some kinks, but we actually liked the sliders better than the normal burger, which is still good, by the way. The sliders, which are mini-burgers, hit the spot and ours were cooked just right with nice bread. It's too bad they only come in threes, because we could've kept going for hours. Maybe it's a good thing they only come in threes. The fries are also quite tasty as is the location and the prices.

This one, located up in Morningside Heights in the northernost reaches of the UWS, gets put on the list less for the burgers (which are fine) but more for this place in history as the Seinfeld hangout, making it worth a visit. Open: 6a-1:30a Su-W, 24-hrs Th-Sa

Fred's a dog. In case you were wondering. This place brings comfort to our hearts and satisfaction to our bellies. The burgers are fricken' awesome. Some people claim they're the best in the UWS, but we're not ready to go that far. All good things come together with their burgers. Choice meat, perfectly melted cheese and fluffy rolls create the entire package. The atmosphere is casual and fun without a hint of dumpiness. It looks like they have many many other great things on the menu, but we can't pull ourselves away from the burgers. The turkey and veggie burgers also rock the proverbial casbah. Open Mon 5pm-11pm; Tue-Thu 11am-11pm; Fri 11am-12am; Sat 10am-12am; Sun 10am-11pm

We threw Josie on the list because it's a healthier alternatives for a cheeseburger, but doesn't skimp on flavor. The beef is lean and hormone-free and they serve natural cheddar or soy American cheese. It's also good if you're rolling with a vegetarian because they have an excellent 3-grain Veggie Cheeseburger. The atmosphere is nice and refreshing, the kind of place you might not expect to serve great burgers. It's a civilized burger experience. You can still belch loudly afterwards to remind everyone how real you keep it, though.
