The East Village is never exhausted of its delicious pizza joints and Luzzo’s on 1st Avenue provides patrons with everything that completes an iconic pizza place. Though the décor seems simple, each piece adorning the walls adds to the old world charm that Luzzo’s naturally exudes. Reminiscent of the pizza place you frequented growing up, Luzzo’s pies have that old country feeling. The thin crust, sweet tomato sauce, and fresh mozzarella are baked to perfection in the traditional coal oven, mastered by multiple men at one time. Though flavorful pastas and appetizers are also served, you’re deadly wrong to avoid going for one of the almost 20 pizzas available.

Though not much of Little Italy remains, Lombardi’s will always remain a Manhattan institution—officially New York’s first pizza establishment—where patrons accept ridiculously long waits to satisfy their cravings for perfect, classically prepared pizza. For over 100 years Lombardi’s has turned out thin crusted pizzas that please the mouth with that smoky oven flavor. The pizza crust retains its crispy oven texture while the centers of the pizzas are soft and delectable. With so many rewarding options decorating the menu, it’s impossible to identify standouts though when making your pizza, be sure to try the highly revered homemade meatballs. Reservations are only accepted Monday through Thursday and are highly recommended. And don’t forget it’s cash only!

Luckily Joe’s Pizza now has additional branches around Manhattan, but if you want the real experience head for the original on Carmine Street where you’ll find yourself in the line outside—everyone else had the same idea. There is nothing special about the pizza joint’s interior. The chairs are wobbly, the space is cramped, and the floors are usually sticky and covered in sauce, napkins, and straw wrappers. But there’s something about a slice from Joe’s that’ll have your tummy eternally grateful. It’s not old world pizza here, but the infamous New York slice—the one with a slightly doughy crust, a nice layer of melted cheese, and the iconic dripping of the grease onto the paper plate. Talk about a masterpiece!
