As Bread features two locations—Nolita and Tribeca—with very different menus and atmospheres, head to the Nolita branch on Spring Street for a better overall experience. If you don’t mind bad service and have all afternoon or evening, the food is definitely worth the visit. The space is cozy and having recently expanded the Spring Street space, many are still shocked evening and weekend waits are still as long. Everything is delicious! The pastas are all fantastic, particularly the tagliatelle in a lamb and tomato sauce. The smoked salmon carpaccio is more salmon than anyone could wish for and tastes fresher than is imaginable. The sandwiches are to die for. The chicken sandwich is a masterpiece, as the mustard balsamic spicy sauce is the perfect addition. Don’t forget to try the tiramisu. You can’t go to Bread without expecting an overdose of carbs.

In the heart of the Lower East Side, former Le Cirque pastry chef Iacopo Falai has opened a bakery, honing his strength yet extending his expertise over salads, sandwiches, and more. Though service leaves a little to be desired, who really cares? Spend the time having an affair with your freshly baked foccacia. Though the paninis are superb—particularly the spice salami and the smoked tuna melt—the meatballs have a local following that crowds the joint on weekends. Weekdays are a perfect time to try out Falai and truly appreciate the cozy space. Could you possibly visit without trying the desserts? Head for the profiteroles!

On a nice day you’ll notice a random assortment of people seated on the two benches outside Karen’s and with a single glance inside you’ll be pulled into the homey space by its delicious and enticing fragrance. “Healthy” natural snacks line the walls in cute portable containers, and the assortment of freshly prepared foods—mostly organic—pleases all tastes. Food choices vary from day to day, but luckily the tuna dill sandwich on sourdough bread is always available. Karen’s also serves a variety of smoothies and coffees that makes it a popular haunt for NYU students throughout the day. Karen’s also specializes in its vegetarian and vegan options.
