This East Village staple pays homage to Jonathan Swift, the Irish satirist immortalized by his great work Gulliver’s Travels. Swift’s strength is its ability to accommodate at any time. Whether you’re stopping by after work to cool off, looking for a crowd to join on a late evening, or hoping to ward off the winter chill with some boozy apple cider, Swift is always able to please. If you’re lucky you’ll stumble in on a night featuring live music, which garners participation from all Swift’s revelers. The awesome, ghostly murals that adorn the walls provide a unique ambiance that’s enhanced by dark wood furnishings, including church pews and a pulpit. Recent complaints criticize Swift for its newly acquired corporate tendencies.

If you’re looking for history, head to McSorley’s, which finally admitted women by court order in the 1970’s. Maybe that’s why the women’s bathrooms are of the ordinary while the men’s urinals morbidly resemble sarcophagi. Only two kinds of beer are served so it’ll be the easiest decision of the night, McSorley’s Light or Dark. Though food is not the pub’s draw, it’s cheap so you’ll likely find yourself shoveling down sandwiches with a pint in hand. When you’ve got a good thing going since 1857, it’s impossible to keep it under the radar, so expect a bit of a line outside on the weekends.
