  • Neko Case  Republic New Orleans
    8:00 PM
    Image of Neko Case
Rolling Stone calls Neko Case "Indie's greatest singer" and her newest release, Middle Cyclone, confirms it, debuting at #1 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart and #3 on the Billboard Top 200! Spin rates it a 9 out of 10, and The New Yorker calls it the "best album of her career by a generous margin". Case has earned critical acclaim and won a steadily growing cult audience for her smoky, sophisticated vocals and the downcast beauty of her music. From her time with the New Pornographers to her own country-infused alternative sound, Case has wooed audiences with a powerful live performance that she'll bring to Republic on November 21st. 18+ NO TICKET FEES!!! Image of KYNT as Von Rothbart in Swan Lake!
Loyola Ballet Fall Performance Date: Friday, November 20, 2009 /Saturday, November 21, 2009 Time: 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm Location: Roussel Performance Hall, Communications/Music Complex The Loyola Ballet celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Ballets Russes with performances on Friday, Nov. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex, on Loyola’s main campus. The impresario Sergei Diaghilev started Ballets Russes in Paris in 1909, which prominently toured the United States between 1930 and 1962. Loyola Ballet, with guest artists Kenneth Kynt Bryan, Kimberly Matulich Beck, Se-Yong Kim and Colleen Murphy, will perform the signature repertoire of the Ballets Russes, which includes Act II of Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake,” excerpts from Offenbach’s “Gaîté Parisienne,” and Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances from his opera “Prince Igor.” The Polovetsian Dances will be accompanied by the Loyola Symphony Orchestra directed by Dr. Jean Montès and a chorus directed by Kate Arthurs. Dancers from the Komenka Ethnic Dance Ensemble will join the Loyola Ballet dancers for this performance. Gayle Parmelee, associate professor emerita and coordinator of the Loyola Preparatory Ballet Program, was a student of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo school in New York. During her early years of teaching, she trained Carolyn Martin, who became a member of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Martin has assisted Loyola Ballet dancers in the style of Ballets Russes for “Swan Lake” for this performance. In addition, Hiller Huhn, also a former student of Gayle Parmelee, staged the Polovetsian Dances for this event. Huhn was formerly the assistant director of Houston Ballet and has previously staged a Ballets Russes performance for that company. Tickets or Fees: $12 General; $8 Students, Seniors, Children and Loyola Faculty/Staff For additional information contact: Jessica Roma at 504-865-2074 or by email at tickets@loyno.edu Additional information may be found at this url: More Information

Image of Big Sam's Funky Nation
Recently awarded the Big Easy Music Award for “Best Funk Group of 2008,” Big Sam’s Funky Nation is a driving force of urban funk. The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” Combining his distinctive trombone riffs with a call-and-response MC style, Big Sam refuses to let the audience sit still. Between the band’s solos and his trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going.

    3:00 PM
Image of Coconut Beach -- Sand Volleyball
Join us for an evening of digs, sets, and spikes at Coconut Beach near West End. Regardless of your skill level, if you have interest...we have an outlet for you. We'll meet for 3 and play until we get tired or until it gets dark...whichever comes first. Format depends on skill level and turnout. Ideally we'd be playing 6 on 6 (this would be forgiving for newer players) or 4 on 4. If we need to play two courts that's doable. Alternatively if the turnout is low, we may just work on skills. Subbing for a struggling team on Net 7 on Wednesdays has got me itching to play more. I hope some of you are feeling the same way. This should be a great chance to get out of the house, meet and reconnect with folks with similar interests, and shake some of the complacency off that comes with the sedentary 9-5 lifestyle. Depending on interest, we can make this a regularly occuring event. I hope to see you on the sand. Don't hesitate to contact me or post here if you have any questions.
