  • Film Series: Walpole, Art, and History  Yale University / Yale Center for British Art
    2:00 PM
Image of Film Series: Walpole, Art, and History
Horace Walpole’s interest in constructing history through the arrangement of his extraordinary collections at Strawberry Hill is echoed in this varied series. Each of these films explores the cinematic representation of historical figures and events in radically di≠erent ways. The series begins with Lotte Reiniger’s short silhouette animation Aschenputtel (Cinderella), shown in homage to the accompanying exhibition Mrs. Delany and her Circle, and Jan Svankmajer’s short film The Castle of Otranto, based on Walpole’s novel of 1764. From the groundbreaking reconstruction of history in Culloden to the swashbuckling and bodice-ripping in Rob Roy and The Private Life of Henry VIII, the series o≠ers both entertainment and the invitation to consider how all histories are constructed. Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (2005), directed by Michael Winterbottom (rated r; 94 minutes). A film about the making of a movie version of Lawrence Sterne’s eighteenth-century masterpiece, it cleverly dissects twenty-first-century conventions of cinematic adaptation.

TAP DOGS is part theater, part dance and part rock concert. Created by two-time Olivier Award-winning choreographer DEIN PERRY, with a construction site set by eclectic designer/director NIGEL TRIFFITT and a driving score by composer ANDREW WILKIE, TAP DOGS, is a rough, tough and rocking reinvention of tap.

Australian DEIN PERRY has come a long way from the make-shift dance school in Newcastle, a steel town north of Sydney, where, as young boys, he and the future dogs learned how to tap. At the age of 17, with no opportunities in sight for a dancing career, he earned his union papers and worked as an industrial machinist for six years. He then moved to Sydney where he tried to break into show business. Small chorus parts in Broadway-style musicals led to Dein's big break when he was cast in the long-running Sydney production of 42nd Street. When it closed, Dein decided to create a contemporary show around the themes of his industrial experience with his Newcastle tap dancing mates.

With a small government grant, Dein contacted his old friends, who had also taken up various "real" jobs by this time, and formed Tap Brothers, an early incarnation of TAP DOGS. From this, Dein was offered the chance to choreograph the West End musical, Hot Shoe Shuffle, which brought the group to London and earned Dein his Olivier Award in 1995. A subsequent offer from the Sydney Theatre Company led to the collaboration with designer and director NIGEL TRIFFITT; which resulted in the creation of TAP DOGS.

TAP DOGS was the instant hit of the Sydney Theatre Festival, where it had its world premiere in January 1995, and caused an equal sensation at the Edinburgh Festival later that year. TAP DOGS then played to standing room only at London's Sadler's Wells, return tours of Australia, and a second West End engagement.

TAP DOGS made their North American debut at Montreal's "Just For Laughs" festival in August 1996. The show then played to critical acclaim on a limited North American tour prior to an engagement in New York City, where Dein Perry earned a 1997 Drama Desk nomination for "Best Choreography" and the show received a 1997 Obie Award. Tap Dogs went on to be immortalized in the movie Bootmen, directed by Dein Perry and inspired by his Tap Dogs experiences. Since it's debut, TAP DOGS has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, Australia, the Far East and South Africa.

  • Book Discussion and Pot Luck  Postal code 06501, United States
    2:30 PM
Image of Book Discussion and Pot Luck
The next book we will read is "Founding Faith: Providence, Politics, and the Birth of Religious Freedom in America" by Steven Waldman. An unabridged audiorecording is also available. Copies of the printed book and the recording are available in public libraries and online. We will meet on Saturday, November 21, 2:30PM until 5:00PM at USNH, 700 Hartford Turnpike in Hamden. We will have a pot luck dinner until 3:30 PM and will then discuss the book. Please bring a dish to share. http://www.amazon.com/Founding-Faith-Providence-Politics-Religious/dp/1400064376 Review ÂÂ"Steven Waldman, a veteran journalist and co-founder of Beliefnet.com, a religious web site, surveys the convictions and legacy of the founders clearly and fairly, with a light touch but a careful eye.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-New York Times Book Review ÂÂ"Waldman ends by encouraging us to be like the founders. We should understand their principles, learn from their experience, then have at it ourselves. 'We must pick up the argument that they began and do as they instructed ÂÂ- use our reason to determine our views.' A good place to start is this entertaining, provocative book.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-New York Times Book Review "Steven Waldman's enlightening new book, Founding Faith, is wise and engaging on many levels, but Waldman has done a particular service in detailing Madison's role in creating a culture of religious freedom that has served America so well for so long .Founding Faith is an excellent book about an important subject: the inescapableÂÂ-but manageableÂÂ-intersection of religious belief and public life. With a grasp of history and an understanding of the exigencies of the moment, Waldman finds a middle ground between those who think of the Founders as apostles in powdered wigs and those who assert, equally inaccurately, that the Founders believed religion had no place in politics." ÂÂ-Newsweek "Well-wrought, well-written and well-reasonedÂÂ-a welcome infusion of calm good sense into a perennially controversial and relevant subject." ÂÂ-Kirkus Reviews "Founding Faith takes up two central questions about religion in early America. First, what did such Founding Fathers as Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison usually believe? And second, how did it come about that the First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees that 'Congress shall make no laws respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof'? The answers to these questions carry implications for our lives today, since at stake is the flash-point principle of the separation of church and state." ÂÂ-Washington Post ÂÂ"There is a fierce custody battle going on out there for ownership of the Founding Fathers. Founding Faith strikes me as a major contribution to that debate, a sensible and sophisticated argument that the FoundersÂÂ' religious convictions defy our current categories.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-Joseph Ellis, author of American Creation ÂÂ"Steven Waldman does a great job describing the nuances of the FoundersÂÂ' beliefs and the balances they struck, thus rescuing them from those on both sides who would oversimplify their ideas.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-Walter Isaacson, president of the Aspen Institute and author of Benjamin Franklin: An American Life. ÂÂ"This is a history every American should know, and Waldman masterfully tells it.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-Jim Wallis, author of The Great Awakening ÂÂ"Steven Waldman recovers the foundersÂÂ' true beliefs with an insightful and truly original argument. It will change the way you think about the separation of church and state.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-George Stephanopoulos, chief Washington correspondent, ABC News, and anchor of This Week ÂÂ"Steve Waldman makes the strong case that the culture wars have distorted how and why we have religious freedom in America. Americans can be inspired by this storyÂÂ-the extraordinary birth story of freedom of religion.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-William J. Bennett, author of America: The Last Best Hope ÂÂ"An unusually well-balanced book on an unusually controversial subject. Not every reader will agree with Waldman that, of the Founding Fathers, James MadisonÂÂ's conclusions about religion and society were best. But all should be grateful for the way Waldman replaces myths with facts, clarifies the complexity in making the Founders speak to present-day problems, and allows the Founders who differed with Madison a full and sympathetic hearing. An exceptionally fair, well-researched, and insightful book.ÂÂ" ÂÂ-Mark A. Noll, University of Notre Dame, author of AmericaÂÂ's God About the Author Steven Waldman is co-founder, CEO, and editor in chief of Beliefnet.com, the largest faith and spirituality website. Previously, Waldman was the national editor of U.S. News & World Report and a national correspondent for Newsweek. His writings have also appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Slate, The Washington Monthly, National Review, and elsewhere. He appears frequently on television and radio to discuss religion and politics. He is also the author of The Bill, a book about the creation of AmeriCorps. Waldman lives in New York with his wife, the writer Amy Cunningham, and their children, Joseph and Gordon.
