The band features members of other notable Madison bands Bongzilla, 12 Gauge Pump, and PK Ripper. Brickshithouse "plays the bell-bottom, beer belly rock of 70s bands like Mountain or Blue Osyter Cult, but with a boogied edge and the irreverence of blue-collar punk." Rounding out the bill are Droids Attack (majestic stoner rock), and Brainerd (balls-to-the-wall rock and flippin' roll).

Mount Eeries work can be delicately spare or booming and ambitiously layered and noisy, often in the same song. Lyrically, he focuses on memory, first-person storytelling, myth, naturalism, the everyday as sacred, and a sense of place. From Vancouver, Canada, No Kids is a trio comprised of 3/4s of the critically revered pop band P:ano, No Kids are multi-instrumentalists Julia Chirka, Justin Kellam, and singer/songwriter Nick Krgovich. Singer-songwriter Tara Jane ONeil opens the show.

    tba.

Future of the Left consists of singer/guitarist Andy "Falco" Falkous and drummer Jack Egglestone, both previously of Cardiff band mclusky, alongside singer/bassist Kelson Mathias, formerly of the Ammanford-based group Jarcrew. The band previously featured Hywel Evans, who has since gone on to start one of Cardiff's only notable math rock bands, Truckers of Husk - he was also a former member of Jarcrew towards the end of Jarcrew's tenure (Evans is also credited as a writer on Fingers Become Thumbs' B-side, The Fibre Provider). The band formed in mid-2005 after both Mclusky and Jarcrew split up within two months of each other at the beginning of the year - this was due to tensions within both bands. The band were signed to Too Pure who had also signed Mclusky, however the umbrella company Beggars Group disbanded Too Pure transferring the band to 4AD; most famous for signing the Pixies in the mid eighties.

They released their second album Travels with Myself and Another on 22 June 2009. However, the album was leaked a month before onto the internet, singer Falkous mentioned his anger at this in a series of blogs . Regardless the album received critical acclaim from reviewers, gaining 9/10 from Drowned in Sound and 8/10 from Pitchfork Media. The band are currently touring various dates in the United Kingdom and America to publicise the album.

NOTE: No one under 18 years old will be admitted.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission that landed two Americans on the moon, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art has organized an exhibition of Robert Rauschenberg's Stoned Moon Series. In July of 1969, Rauschenberg was invited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to witness the launch of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on Cape Canaveral at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Several days after the event, Rauschenberg decided to create a personal response in the form of an extended print series of thirty-four lithographs. Selecting official photographs and diagrams from NASA's archive as a basis for the project, Rauschenberg traveled to Los Angeles to produce the series in collaboration with the publishing workshop Gemini G.E.L. Space exploration became a major subject in Rauschenberg's during the 1960s. The consummate expression of this theme is the Stoned Moon Series.

In "Precious Resources" films, audiences can consider how economics, power, cultural values and geography all play into the mix of what constitutes a precious resource. Because scarcity -- of quality food, water, land, fossil fuels and other commodities -- is not simply about the limits of nature.

  • Erin McKeown & Jill Sobule  High Noon Saloon
    8:00 PM
Image of Erin McKeown & Jill Sobule
Jill kicks things off, while Erin closes.
And as a special surprise the two of them
    play a couple songs together.

    Jill Sobule:
Jill Sobule belongs to a rare breed of artists. Her work is at once deeply personal and socially conscious, seriously funny and derisively tragic. Over five albums and a decade of recording, the Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer has tackled such topics as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, the French resistance movement, adolescence, and the Christian right. Did we mention love? Love found, love lost, love wished for and love taken away.

While her songs cover a huge amount of ground, they all have benefit greatly from Jill's subtle intelligence and skillful light-handedness. No sloganeering flag-and-fist waving here, but rather story songs about human beings, real and imagined, which allow us to step back from the issue, be it personal or social, and relate to it as we would a close friend.

To see Jill live and in concert is a rare treat. It is on stage that she is most comfortable, most powerful, and where the delicacy and range of her work can be best appreciated. She entertains, amuses, provokes, and more often then not, takes her audiences on an emotional roller coaster, from comedy to pathos in a few bars of music.

Jill began playing guitar when she joined the Junior High School band. She never learned to read music, though, and faked her way through rehearsals and performances by playing by ear. As she began writing songs, it was very clear to Jill this was becoming more than a teenage hobby. Music was serious stuff. She played in a variety of funk and rock bands in Colorado, and eventually made her first, Todd Rundgren-produced, album for MCA, Things Here Are Different.

But success did not knock on her door until three years later, when Atlantic Records released her MTV staple and national top 20 hit, I Kissed A Girl. "That song was a double-edged sword for me," Jill Says. "It was perceived as a novelty hit, but on the other hand it was the first song with an overtly gay topic to be aired on Top 40 radio. I am quite proud of that." The self-titled album also yielded another hit song, Supermodel, included in the Clueless soundtrack.

The song also jumpstarted her live music career in a big way, and since then she's had the honor to induct Neil Diamond in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, to share the stage with the likes of Neil Young (at his yearly Bridge School benefit concerts), fellow activists Billy Bragg & Steve Earle, and Waren Zevon. Quite the serious guitar player, she even toured the world as lead guitarist in Lloyd Cole's band a few years back.

Since then, she has made four more critically acclaimed albums, Happy Town, Pink Pearl, Underdog Victorious, and 2009's California Years, which Jill released on her own record label, Pinko Records, after collecting over $85,000 from fans who funded the project.

A veritable gypsy, Jill divides her time between a busy touring schedule and a variety of other projects. She has played the role of political troubadour for NPR stations across the country and for Air America Radio. She also served as songwriter/composer for the hit Nickelodeon network show Unfabulous during that show's three-season run. She composed the music for the off-Broadway show Prozak and the Platypus and co-starred in the Eric Schaeffer film Mind the Gap .

In the words of New York Times pop music critic Jon Pareles, "Jill Sobule can claim her place among the stellar New York singer-songwriters of the last decade. Topical, funny and more than a little poignant ... grown-up music for an adolescent age."

Erin McKeown:Erin McKeown has packed a ton of music into a substantial career. With 6 albums, 2 EPs, and numerous soundtracks and compilations to her credit, the 31-year-old songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer hasn't stopped for a breather in the last 10 years. Along the way she has averaged 200 shows a year and garnered the praise of fans and critics alike.

McKeown's latest project is a brand new full length album of original songs, due in the fall of 2009. Produced by Sam Kassirer and mixed by Brian Deck, Erin's latest will continue in her unique tradition of fresh and unusual music. Meanwhile, she's begun to step out as an in-demand side player. This year she'll also be contributing regularly to her ongoing writing projects including blogs, essays, and poems.

Erin McKeown has performed her songs all over the world, and her music has been featured on television shows "The LWord", "Gilmore Girls", "Priveleged", "Jake in Progress", and "Nip/Tuck". She has appeared in People Magazine, on the cover of Paste Magazine, on NPR, Jools Holland, and Conan O'Brien. She's proud to have shared the stage with friends Andrew Bird, Ani DiFranco, Amy Ray, Martin Sexton, Josh Ritter, Michelle Shocked, Mike Doughty, Matt Nathanson, Stephen Kellogg, and Richard Thompson.

"Airborne metaphors carry the songwriter Erin McKeown all the way through her fourth album, We Will Become Like Birds (Nettwerk). Her clear mezzo-soprano sounds perpetually optimistic, and so do the syncopated electric guitar parts she picks and plucks through the sparsely arranged but fully realized songs." - Jon Pareles, New York Times

"Her operative mood is effortless grace." - LA Weekly

"Her playing is so muscular, her arrangements so well conceived that she succeeds brilliantly. As with all truly great guitarists, the wonder is less in her chops than her choices."- Boston Globe

"In several distinctive ways - voice, dynamic subtlety, and sheer songwriting ability - Erin McKeown is in a class of her own."- Sunday Times (UK)

NOTE: No one under 21 years old will be admitted.
