Beach bums and beach billionaires alike adore Abbot’s Habit. Tucked on a corner of lovely Abbot Kinney (way fun shopping), the Habit is open for you to enjoy some strong, solid coffee. They also have pastries, sandwiches and subs, as well as an extensive tea menu for the non-coffee crowd. This is a space alive with the locals where the art on the walls are for sale and eclectic (and eccentric) open mic nights are frequent. Hours: Sun-Thu 6 am-10 pm, Fri-Sat 6 am-11 pm

This happy hut is always busy serving amazing, organic coffee. The laid back vibe is completely void of any corporate overtones. If you are looking for a regular cup of joe, just help yourself to the coffee in the middle of the room. And if you are looking for more fancy blends, just order at the counter. The simple wooden floors are warm and the walls are stacked with coffee and tea, which creates a general store/library/coffee emporium feeling. Head there to feel the caffeinated love. Hours: Mon-Fri 6am – 7pm, Sat-Sun 7am – 7pm

When you want a quiet cup of fair trade coffee that you can enjoy with your book or laptop, Novel Café is your destination. This was formerly a bookstore that now serves Groundwork coffee and Broadway deli foods. The space kind of feels like your grandmother’s attic and is a great place to play an old school board game, philosophize with a friend or get some creative juices flowing. Computers and Wi-Fi aplenty! Hours: Mon-Sat 7am-1am, Sun 8am-12am

This colorful coffee lounge is busy with activity and open mic nights that showcase the community’s interests and talent. Popular with the locals as well as Santa Monica College students, The Talking Stick welcomes everyone; even kids have their own special area filled with toys called the “pillow room”. Come and enjoy the variety of coffee, tea and lighter fare with friends, or come on your own and make some new ones. Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30am-10pm, Sat-Sun 9am-10pm

You can be your funky, artsy self at the Unurban. Or if you’re not artsy or funky, that’s cool with the Unurban, too. The inside of the multi-room lounge is all about freedom of expression. You will find local art, local talent, and local loonies. There is lots of tasty coffees to be had, all well below the Starbucks’ price point, and there is even a bizarre little gift shop where you can purchase an absurd card, a rude bumper sticker or an organic cotton skirt. It is eco-indie heaven! Hours: Mon-Sat 7am-12am, Sun 7am-8pm

Coupa Café provides some of the finest Venezuelan coffee on the Westside. They work directly with 18 farms to insure fair trade, and the beans are hand collected and sun dried. This results in an extraordinarily rich coffee experience. Located in the heart of Beverly Hills, Coupa is warm yet spacious, complete with an indoor fireplace, outdoor water fountain and garden seating. In addition to the coffee, they have a full service menu with all the American classics covered, but be sure to try a Venezuelan dish or two (please try an Arepa: a cornmeal cake stuffed with sweet or savory morsels). So delicious! Hours: Daily 7:30am-11:00pm
