With 100,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States. A museum of international stature as well as a vital part of Southern California, LACMA shares its vast collections through exhibitions, public programs, and research facilities that attract nearly a million visitors annually. LACMA’s collections encompass the geographic world and virtually the entire history of art. Among the museum’s special strengths are its holdings of Asian art, housed in part in the Bruce Goff-designed Pavilion for Japanese Art; Latin American art, ranging from pre-Columbian masterpieces to works by leading modern and contemporary artists. Housed in a historic train station, this arts complex exudes modern cool. Artists and art lovers alike flock to this warehouse to view the collection in the Santa Monica Museum of Art and visit other numerous galleries such as the Gallery of Functional Art. Bergamot Station houses 33 galleries, 10 shops and a cafe. Parking is plentiful and FREE at all times. There’s a $5 suggested donation for visitors. This is certainly not your ordinary museum. At the Museum of Tolerance, you’ll come face to face with racism and prejudice in our country, past and present. You’ll witness history of the Holocaust and reflect upon the journey of humanity. The Museum of Tolerance delivers an interactive, provocative experience created to engage your heart and mind and inspire change. You will become part of the experience. Admission is $13 for adults; $11 for seniors (62+); $10 for students with ID and youth ages 5 – 18; and no charge for children under 5 years old. Swing by the UCLA campus to visit the famous Hammer Museum. You’ll see Armand Hammer’s personal art collection, consisting mostly of traditional western European and Anglo-American art, and contains noteworthy paintings by Toulouse-Lautrec, Rembrandt, Degas, and Van Gogh. Known for its daring and provocative exhibits, the Hammer frequently presents contemporary political and experimental art. Be sure you call ahead to find out what will be there during your visit. Admission is $5 for adults; $3 for seniors (65+) and UCLA Alumni Association Members with ID card; free for museum members, students with ID cards, UCLA faculty and staff and visitors 17 and under accompanied by an adult.
