Rose Café is bright and sunny and full of fresh and healthy dishes. They also have a very fun little gift shop within the café that is hard to resist. If you like super cute and kitschy cards, candles, books and other various trinkets, you may end up buying more that brunch. They have all the basics covered (omelets, various poached egg dishes and pancakes), but they also serve lots of interesting brunch salads and sandwiches after 11:30am. Try the Grilled Vegetable Sandwich with peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, zucchini and onions dressed with a balsamic aioli. It’s perfectly satisfying. Hours: daily 8am-3pm, Self-service open daily 7am-5:30pm

It’s surprisingly easy to channel your inner Mickey Rourke at this corner dive in Santa Monica, which open daily at 6 AM. Maybe it’s the red vinyl booths, the mirrored walls, the dimly lit long wooden bar, or that last whiskey highball which creates the perfect Barfly ambiance. Avoid karaoke nights on Tuesday and Thursdays like the plague, unless your idea of fun is listening to some skinny white kid ruin “Baby got back.” Man law # 32 - Dive bars are for drinking not singing. Open Mon 12am-2am, 6am-2am; Tue-Sat 6am-2am; Sun 6am-12am

Perched over the ocean and smack dab in the middle of the world famous Santa Monica Pier, The Lobster has been around since 1923. Indoor and outdoor seating provides amazing views, and the food is nothing to scoff at. The vibe is definitely casual elegance, with an emphasis on casual (this is LA, after all). They cover all the great seafood restaurant bases, but for something different, try the lobster salad served on sweet corn and scallion pancakes. They also serve perfectly fried calamari with a very lemony twist, served with a garlic sauce that is truly memorable. Hours: Sun-Thu 11:30am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-11pm

Ranked in the Best of Sneaky 2007, the Venice Whaler is a great place to see and be seen. Um we know, that's what we do. So after the Sneaky house was put on double secret probation, we did the next best thing. Instead of hosting another party on the veranda, we just went straight to Venice Whaler. And let me tell you, it was fun, maybe more fun than the Delta, I mean Sneaky house. Hotties, great view of the beach, live music at night, drink specials, food, two stories (floors) of fun-what's not to like? Right. Were you wondering the same thing? Open Mon-Thu 11am-12am; Fri 11am-1am; Sat 10am-1am; Sun 10am-12am

Fancy taxi! Euro offers Mercedes Benz S Class models that use biodiesel, making them the most environmentally conscious ride in Santa Monica. Exposed brick with a breezy atmosphere makes Mao’s almost feel like a bohemian coffee shop. Then you smell the Orange-ginger Chicken. If you eat in, you will discover egg batter chips (fried egg noodles) at the table with a sweet-sour dipping sauce that will likely ignite a powerful addiction. Come for the excellent lunch specials daily 11:30am-5pm that includes your choice of entrée, rice, salad and spring roll. Mao’s also gets a gold star for being super friendly with substitutions (meat, tofu, nuts…all interchangeable), which is a sure mark of orders being cooked as they come in. For the price (very reasonable) and the freshness factor, it’s worth the wait during lunch and dinner rush. Plus, it’s in the heart of Venice, so relaxing while you wait should be easy. Hours: Sun-Thu 11:30am-10:30pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-3am

You’ve never tasted a sandwich so good. You’ll crave it and come back again and again. Trust us, it’s totally addictive. If it weren’t for the crazy lunch crowd, you’d be there EVERY day. Not only are the sammies killer (try their signature Godmother sandwich with the works), but you can also browse the rows of authentic Italian specialty foods while you wait for your order. Pick up a loaf of freshly baked bread for later if you haven’t already OD’ed on carbs. Here’s a sneaky tip – order online or fax in your order to avoid the long deli counter lines. Finally, New York pizza has officially arrived to the Westside. The Santa Monica outpost of the original Joe’s Pizza from Bleecker Street opened this year to swarms of hungry ex-New Yorkers ready to get a bite of the Big Apple. Be a purist and go with a cheese slice. The thin Sicilian style crust with fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella is molto bene. Hours: Sun-Thu 11am-12am; Fri-Sat 11am-2am

For starters, go for the No-Cheez appetizer, which is a dynamic combo plate of guacamole, carrot salsa, black bean dip and tofu sour cream served with blue and yellow corn chips. When it comes to oysters, Ocean Ave. Seafood is a clear standout. Their raw bar, which is likely the largest in all of LA, features plump and juicy oysters from both coasts. You can also choose to order the Oyster and Wine sampler, which involves six different types of oysters paired with tasters of four types of white wine. Before you dive into the sublime oysters, make sure your date is someone you really like. We wouldn’t want that aphrodisiac power to cloud your judgment. Mental note: don’t miss their "Oyster Hour" from 4pm-6:30pm Mon-Fri and 3pm-5pm on the weekends. Hours: Sun-Thu 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11am-11pm
(310) 399-1171

We’re not sure what is better – the fresh seafood or the breathtaking view. Try to score a table near the window, so you can catch a beautiful SoCal sunset. When you are finally able to switch your gaze from the window to the menu, you’ll discover The Lobster offers a large variety of classic American seafood dishes. As you may have guessed, the Steamed American lobster fresh from Maine does not disappoint. Be sure to start off with a creamy, decadent bowl of the lobster and Manila clam chowder scented with apple wood smoked bacon and thyme. Hours: Sun-Thurs 11:30am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-11pm

We could all use a little Southern hospitality, right? Well, that’s what this new SanMo restaurant and sports bar aims to deliver to the neighborhood. It’s a shrine for all things Southern from the pictures of Elvis to the good ol’ Southern cocktails like Mint Juleps and Hurricanes right down to the fried green tomatoes. Speaking of the menu, they serve lots of New Orleans faves such as hush puppies, Gumbo, Po’ Boys, Jambalaya and Crawfish Etouffee. This spot is always abuzz with tourists, billiard lovers and sports fans. Happy Hour runs from 4:30-7:30pm on weekdays with a Late Night Happy Hour from 10pm-2am, Sunday through Thursday. The food and drink menus are as loaded and extensive as the place itself. Hours: Mon-Fri 11am-2am, Sat-Sun 9am-2am
(310) 399-7537
The crowd is as cool as the ambience. With modern, clean and quirky décor, and moody lighting it feels just like Abbot Kinney; hip, artsy and just a little gritty. This is a great spot to mingle with the beach crowd as well as the Venice artists/skateboarders/graphic designer crowd on the weekends. A DJ spins a mix of electronica, hip hop and old school jams. The vibe can get rowdy, but overall this is more of a chill spot than a wild party. Hours: Mon-Fri 6pm-2am, Sat-Sun 7pm-2am

Gorgeous views. Gorgeous people. With a live DJ most nights playing hip and moody tracks, Moonshadows is a quintessential LA experience. Be ready for a celebrity sighting. The food is seafood centric and beautifully presented, and the desserts make for a sweet ending. They are famous for their chocolate soufflé cake which manages to be simultaneously light and decadent. Total aphrodisiac. Like the rest of the thoughtful menu, it is seasonal so desserts change, but rest assured you will have an excellent experience. Oh Wolfgang, you’ve done it once again. The great restaurant emperor of LA has taken on the steakhouse. Or shall we say “mastered” the steakhouse. From the moment you walk in, you’ll see that it certainly does impress. Designed by Getty architect Richard Meier, Cut’s posh digs are full of chrome and black, screaming power and excess. And they’ve got a menu that’s equally impressive with appetizers such as bone marrow flan and Kobe sashimi followed by an extensive list of beef cuts with their point of origin. When it comes to beef, everything does get better with age. Try the Prime Illinois Corn Fed 21-Day Aged Bone-in Rib Eye Steak. To-die-for! Hours of Operation: Mon-Thurs 5:30 pm-10pm; Fri-Sat 5:30pm-10:30pm; Closed Sun.

This is sushi Nirvana. Pretty much every piece of fish you taste is pure perfection. Chef Urasawa believes in nothing less. Hands down, Baby Blues is the most famous BBQ joint on the Westside. Small space, big food. No worries about portion size here, folks. The meat falls off the bone and does not need their excellent sauce –it’s excellent on its own. Cornbread with bits of corn, smoky collard greens and mac and cheese so dense you have to cut it with a knife. Another pleasant surprise is the shrimp, which are perfectly cooked with a tangy lime taste. The topper is great atmosphere, so with all that being said, brace yourself for a wait…it’s worth it! Hours: 11:30am-10pm Mon-Thurs, 11:30am-11pm Fri-Sat, noon-10pm Sun

Bizarre and kind of wonderful, Hot Wings & Things provides some tasty wings…and hookah? Hilarious. This spot is a bit of a hole in the wall and is very popular with UCLA students. Almost everything is fried and pretty darn tasty. The wings are well done, crispy with lots of skin and little meat, and topped off with a vinegary sauce. If you’re ready to go off the diet, they will give you a meal worthy of the guilt. Hours: Mon-Sat 11am-9pm, Sun closed

It’s currently one of the most talked about restaurants in the city. This newcomer on the hot, hot Culver City restaurant scene is holding its own as a fine purveyor of French cuisine, yet you won’t break the bank when dining here. Chef Jason Travi, formerly of Spago and La Terza, executes each dish with absolute perfection. For example, the Duck Rillettes, which is duck cooked in its own fat resulting in a pâté of duck meat and fat, is nothing short of outstanding. The Mediterranean striped sea bass wrapped in parchment paper is also heavenly. If you are lucky enough to receive a coveted patio spot on a nice evening, you may never want to leave. Hours: Mon-Sun 5:30pm-11pm

Tom Colicchio’s hot spot has made its debut in LA. It’s set in rather corporate surroundings, which fits the power dining mentality amongst the industry types that frequent the restaurant. The good news is that Colicchio’s got a menu that will make you ooh and ahh for long after you dine. The a la carte menu focuses on sizable entrees like Dry-aged Steak or the Copper-potted Braised Rabbit. While it sounds quite adventurous, the skillet-cooked duck egg with gizzard confit is sensational and an absolute must. Hours: Mon-Thurs 11:30am-2:30pm, 6pm-10pm; Fri 11:30am-2:30pm, 6pm-10:30pm; Sat 6pm-10:30pm; Sun 5pm-9pm

You have to be super sneaky to find this “hidden gem” tucked away in a non-descript West LA strip mall. Little did you know that you’d find a cozy, neighborhood bistro serving up favorite comfort foods such as pork chops and homemade mac and cheese. Or how about Spicy Gulf Shrimp & Grits or Slow Roasted Loch Duart Organic Salmon? And last, but certainly not least, the Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding is de-lish. Leave it to your oh-so-sneaky friend to give you the hook up. Hours: Mon-Fri 11:30am-3pm, 5pm-10pm; Sat 5pm-10pm; Closed Sundays.

Beach bums and beach billionaires alike adore Abbot’s Habit. Tucked on a corner of lovely Abbot Kinney (way fun shopping), the Habit is open for you to enjoy some strong, solid coffee. They also have pastries, sandwiches and subs, as well as an extensive tea menu for the non-coffee crowd. This is a space alive with the locals where the art on the walls are for sale and eclectic (and eccentric) open mic nights are frequent. Hours: Sun-Thu 6 am-10 pm, Fri-Sat 6 am-11 pm
(310) 453-0477
Super clean, super quick and super healthy; California Chicken Café is a local institution because they serve fresh and tasty dishes that won’t deflate the bank or inflate the scale. The inside is simple and a bit noisy, so it’s not the place to have a heart to heart. You order at the counter and then take your number to a table and they bring the food to you. They even have a Weight Watchers points value menu available, so no need to guess about what you are consuming. The Chinese Chicken Salad and chicken wraps are very popular, as are their vegetarian wraps. Hours: Mon-Fri 11am-10pm, Sat noon-10pm, Sun Closed

The Blue on Blue restaurant and lounge at the oh so Hollywood Avalon Hotel has a super fun Sunday afternoon “Detox-Retox” from 2pm-6pm. They have a special menu which can help the hangover (bbq brisket sliders, corn and crab hushpuppies, sparkling pomegranate lemonade) or create the hangover (build-your-own Bloody Mary). Of course the Bloody Marys are always available, but this is a great way to end the weekend. It feels like an industry spot, but not in a bad way (no snooty service here). The bar menu’s focus is on comfort foods with a modern twist (“Sloppy Janes” made with turkey, fish-n-chips fritters, blue cheese burgers…). The Blue on Blue dining menu is way fancier and delectable (try the inventive arugula and date salad with coconut and walnuts, or the lobster fettuccini in a Meyer lemon sauce). Hours: Daily 7am-1:30am
