Come for the history (the Doors played here as well as some notable early punk bands), stay for the music. The Whisky A Go Go has been around for a while, so most people have different opinions about the state of this venue. Yeah, it's on the dirty side, but we like that in a live music joint. Oh, it's also super loud, but again, what do you expect? Intimate venues are special places to see music. And that's why The Whisky A Go Go holds a special place in our heart. Hours: Daily 6:30pm-2am

The sun never sets on the Sunset Strip. And it also has yet to set on The Roxy, one of LA's most celebrated music venues, which has been doing the whole live music thing since 1973. If any venue has earned the right to name drop, The Roxy has. Neil Young played the opening night. Springsteen played here. So did Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, Miles Davis and a 'lil group called Guns N' Roses. The sound system is arguably the best in the city and The Roxy is just small enough to provide that intimate feel you've been lacking since your college sweetheart moved out. Hours: Daily 8pm-2am

This isn't your all-ages-friendly concert venue. Oh no, The Viper Room is your 21 and over (sometimes way over) cooler-than-thou bar with a stage and stiff drinks. The place is small, which means you'll be crammed from time-to-time, but it also means there isn't a bad seat in the house. In fact, there are almost no seats in the house. The Viper Room is what we call "standing room only" folks. In addition to the tons of cool new bands rolling through, TVR is also known to pull in the stadium acts looking to play those special, intimate gigs. If you're fortunate enough to be there on one of those occasions, we're already jealous. Hours: Daily 8pm-2am

Wear your dancing shoes. And if you need a pair, hit up the DSW across the way. The knitting Factory has just enough room to dance (or at least bob your head) and more than enough bars to make you glad your friend is the designated driver. While the decibel level is known to get pretty high, your chances of finding a parking spot are equally as lofty. They've got two stages, which allow this venue some flexibility when it comes to booking musical acts. And as the saying goes, "The more the merrier." Hours: Vary

Doesn't every city have a HOB? Not that it's a bad thing. They're clean, well decorated and don't smell like the belly sweat of old men in a sauna. But sometimes that's what's missing from a venue like this. The aroma of perspiring peers pressed together, bobbing in unison, comforted by that intangible feeling that when it comes to live music, we're all in this together. Of course a majority of concertgoers also dread the sweaty claustrophobia, and for them, there's no better concert hall than HOB. Hours: Mon-Thu 5pm-12am, Fri-Sat 5pm-1am, Sun seatings 10am, 1pm

Nestled in the (someday) historic western edge of the Sunset Strip, the Key Club has just what you'd expect from a music venue in this part of town: loud performers (whether hip-hop or metal), great sound, proximity to the band and drinks served in plastic cups. They're pretty cool about giving up-and-coming groups a chance to play, so who knows? One day you may be able to say you saw INSERT BAND NAME at the Key Club before INSERT BAND NAME made it big. They also have great lighting, in case you're into that. Hours: Vary
