Paulie Shore (you know him from Encino Man) runs The Comedy Store, which has become a Sunset Boulevard institution. Everybody who's anybody has performed here (including Michael Richards – oh, wait… he was run out of the Comedy Store a while ago for some bad racial jokes), so we'll forego the name dropping and cut to the punch line (j/k). The Comedy Store skimps on the electricity in order to pay their attentive staff. We like that when we call, they answer, which makes making reservations a piece of cake. The acts are funny and several performers are household names, or will be soon. Hours: Daily 9pm-2am

Comedy is hit or miss and the acts at The Laugh Factory are no exception. But when they hit, boy are they funny. This well-known showroom has been showcasing big names as well as up-and-coming talent since 1979. Richard Pryor was The Laugh Factory's first comedian and since his appearance, thousands of others have followed in his footsteps. As noted above, not all are hilarious, but enough of the jokesters are funny enough to make coming here worth your while. The long lines will likely be the least humorous part of your Laugh Factory experience. Hours: Daily 8pm-2am

This venue has funny comedians, decent food and shorter lines (if any) than most of its competition. On Tuesday's you can find open mic nights, where tomorrow's stars earn their chops. On weekends more recognized names take to the stage and sometimes after their set, you can meet these jokesters at the Hollywood Improv bar, where the drinks are heavy and prices reasonable. No joke. Hours: Daily 6pm-1am

Comedy is on the menu at the Acme Comedy Theatre. In fact, it's the only thing on the menu, as in: Acme doesn't serve food, just laughs. The sketch comedy here is top notch and performers like Adam Carolla and Joel McHale have earned their stripes here over the years. Admission to a show is 10 bills flat, plus a one-drink minimum. And their comfy seats will have you feeling right at home…especially if your home happens to be a well-worn improv theatre. Hours: Show times vary

In addition to their 99-seat theatre and zany sketch shows, The Groundlings has been training the stars of tomorrow through improvisation classes (and they feature some of the best talent around). The theatre's intimate setting is perfect for taking a date or a small group of friends. We'd be happier if they had food and drinks, but the great comedy more than makes up for the lack of edibles.
