Rosanne Vita Nahass, Zimmerli Art Museum Pianist in Residence "The veil of mysticism, the secret harmonies of Nature, the thrill of the supernatural, the twilight vagueness of the borderland of dreams…” These words stated by Ferrucio Busoni in his Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music (1907) reflect his idea of what can be expressed by music. Busoni is often overlooked and his landmark masterpiece, the Fantasia Contrappuntistica, is rarely heard in public performance. Composed in 1910 and completed in New Orleans during an American concert tour, the Fantasia Contrappuntistica is based on Bach’s unfinished last composition, The Art of Fugue. Busoni rewrites the work perhaps as Bach would have, had he lived bridging the era of Romanticism with Modernity.
