  • James McNeill Whistler and the Romance of Great Cities  Grand Rapids Art Museum
    12:00 AM
Image of James McNeill Whistler and the Romance of Great Cities
Organized by Grand Rapids Art Museum

    Made possible by
    Wege Foundation

    October 2, 2009-January 10, 2010

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts and educated at West Point Academy, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) left America in 1855 to become a truly international artist. He made his home in London, with frequent trips to Paris and other European capitals. In an era of tourism, Whistler traveled with sketchbooks. He produced both prints and paintings that captured the romance of quiet streets, teeming avenues, and grand vistas in the cities of London, Venice and Paris.

In doing so, he was taking a cue from critic Charles Baudelaire's 1859 suggestion that artists should depict the modern world around them, including "the landscape of great cities...the profound and complex charm of a capital city which has grown old and aged in the glories and tribulations of life." An accomplished printmaker, Whistler utilized etching and lithography to depict city scenes in his own distinctive style.

London was the subject of Whistler's earliest urban views, dating from 1859. His etchings of scenes along the Thames River depicted merchants, fishermen and their docks, all of which would soon give way to construction of the Embankment. In Venice during 1879 and 1880 Whistler's style changed. His etchings, with their broken lines and tonal effects, became more suggestive and his work captured an aspect of Venice that he described as, "never previously perceived." In Paris in the 1890s, Whistler utilized the process of transfer lithography to create spontaneous and intimate impressions of storefronts, public buildings, and the Luxembourg Gardens.

James McNeill Whistler and the Romance of Great Cities includes more than forty etchings and lithographs dating from 1859 to 1896 drawn from the collection of Joan Winchell.

  • Henry Moore: Master Printmaker  Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

The Lillian Heidenberg Gift to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

    October 9, 2009 â€" January 3, 2010

Although celebrated globally as one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, Henry Moore (1898 -1986) was also a master draftsman and printmaker. Although he first experimented with printmaking in the 1930s, it became a significant part of his repertoire beginning in the 1960s. This exhibition draws from a collection of 24 master prints recently presented to Meijer Gardens by Lillian Heidenberg, one of Mr. Moore’s primary gallerists. Moore explored many of his major sculptural themes in etchings and lithographs including seated and reclining figures, mother and child, and animals. This exhibition is the premier presentation of work from this important gift to Meijer Gardens.

  • Image of Tissot’s London 1871-1882: The Art and Culture of City Life
Organized by Grand Rapids Art Museum

    Made possible by
    Barbara and Thomas Jackoboice

    October 2, 2009-January 3, 2010

With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, French artist James Tissot (1836-1902) chose to relocate to London with its thriving art market and promise of artistic patronage. He was welcomed to the city by supportive friends, including James McNeill Whistler and lived in London for the next decade. Within a few years Tissot became one of the most popular and successful artists in England.

The paintings and prints Tissot produced over the decade of the 1870s record aspects of London's urban culture. The city's museums, parks, streets, taverns, and residences served as both stage and subject for his scenes of daily life. Tissot depicted city residents and visitors engaged in everyday activities, set within characteristic London architecture and gardens. In addition to providing glimpses of St. Paul's Cathedral and the National Gallery, he portrayed English public life set against the backdrop of the Thames River, the commercial lifeblood of the city seen in Tissot's work as a setting for leisure and recreation.

Tissot's London 1871-1882: The Art and Culture of City Life includes major paintings on loan from museums in the United States and Canada and etchings from private collections.

  • Image of American Impressionism: Paintings from The Phillips Collection
American Impressionism: Paintings from The Phillips Collection

Organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.

    October 2, 2009 - January 3, 2010

Duncan Phillips (1886-1966) was among the early collectors of American impressionist paintings, acquiring most of the works in this exhibition directly from artists he had come to know. Initially drawn to works by Ernest Lawson, Phillips soon discovered John Twachtman and J. Alden Weir, mentors of Lawson. The poetic vein of American impressionism satisfied Phillips' passion for modern landscape painting. He considered Theodore Robinson to be more romantic than Claude Monet, with whom Robinson had worked at Giverny. Phillips' acquisition of works by American impressionists soon formed the cornerstone of his collection. He admired the lyrical quality of these intimate landscapes that portrayed the changing light of seasons and times of day.

The fifty-four paintings included in the exhibition feature the pioneers of American impressionism -- Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, John Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, William Glackens, and Maurice Prendergast. These artists created a new interpretation of America's landscape and cities. Through a network of artistic friendships, classroom teaching at the Art Students League in New York, and the establishment of artists' colonies throughout New England and in Giverny, France, American impressionism became nationally widespread and stylistically diverse.

The national tour of the exhibition is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts as part of its American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Genius program.

  • Lynn Chadwick: In Contact  Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

Image of Lynn Chadwick: In Contact
Sculpture from the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art, Ursinus College

    October 9, 2009 - January 3, 2010

Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003) was one of several talented British sculptors who burst upon the international art scene in the late 1950s. He established a critically acclaimed body of work that continued to develop well into the late 20th century. Inspired by the career of Henry Moore, Chadwick’s sculpture displays a fascinating evolution of personal images through powerful series of abstracted human figures, animals, birds and imaginary beasts. This retrospective exhibition, the first in the United States since the artist’s death in 2003, features 43 sculptures and 5 lithographs from the permanent collection of the Phillip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College. Beginning with the highly geometric and strongly linear figures and beasts of the 1950s, this exhibition follows the chronology of the master’s career through to the majestic and sensuous male and female forms of the 1980s. This exhibition is organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions in conjunction with Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
