What has 3 levels, 2 full bars, 12 flat screen TV’s, and a cutting edge menu that is sure to make other bars jealous? Fifty/50 in Wicker Park, that’s what. The brain child of owners Greg Mohr and Scott Weiner – veterans of several Chicago restaurants – Fifty/50 offers its clientele the perfect sports bar atmosphere whether they are looking for a sit-down dinner, or a casual bar experience. Bite size sliders, stuffed mushrooms, lobster salad sandwiches, and marinated skirt steak with fried onion strings are just a handful of the mouth watering options that Mohr and Weiner have dreamed up, but forget all of those for a second, because I have 4 ½ words for you: Macaroni N’ Cheese Au Gratin. For $8 you can indulge yourself in this reincarnation of a childhood favorite that comes topped with buttered bread crumbs and your choice of one ingredient (Get the bacon. C’mon, you know you want to.). Top it all off with a huge selection of wine, beer, and cocktails, including a “40 oz.” of the week that is served to you in a brown paper bag – no, we’re not kidding. Go grab your keys. Hours of Operation: Mon-Thu 4pm-2am; Fri & Sun 11am-2am; Sat 11am-3am.

In this age of grilled chicken wraps, wasabi glazed beef tip salad, and tofu hot dogs, sometimes it’s good to remember that the traditional dishes can still be the best on the menu. In the heart of Lincoln Park you will find all the essentials of an Irish Pub as well as an extensive weekend brunch menu for anyone craving a mimosa with your steak and eggs. Modern influences have crept into McGee’s predominantly pub-style menu with selections that include less authentic Irish cuisine like quesadillas and jalapeno poppers. But try McGee’s Famous Irish Nachos, an absolute must-have not only for the taste, but also to ogle at the shocking amount of toppings. At the heart of this Lincoln Park stand-by though, is the food that is the staple of the quintessential sports bar – a good old fashioned hamburger. Burgers, beer, and sports: a great combo that has kept Irish eyes smilin’ for years. Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri 11am-2am; Sat 9am-3am; Sun 11am-2am.

You’ve just spent the day at the Shedd Aquarium with your family. The whole gang is getting pretty hungry and you’re craving a nice cold beer after all that walking around. You think, “I can just wait until we get home,” when you look down at your watch and realize “The Sox game is on now!” The kids are hungry, you’re thirsty, and you’re missing the game, but DON’T PANIC. Kroll’s extensive menu offers a little something for everyone. Craving some high quality, Wisconsin-born, greasy goodness? Try the Kroll’s famous butter topped hamburger, which they’ve been serving since 1936. You’ll find it hard to decide between selections like juicy pork chops and grilled yellow fin tuna; but for this sports fan’s money, you cannot say no to the beer-battered shrimp. Oh, and there’s also 99 beer selections, daily drink specials, White Sox Home Game events, a specialty wine list, and 24 flat screen TV’s to sweeten the deal. Rejoice sports fans of the South Loop; you have found yourselves a home. Hours: Mon-Sun 11am-10pm

At the Gaslight Bar and Grille, you will come for the food and stay for the sports. And you can forget the greasy pub food, Gaslight is keeping up with the trends. Their salad selections are top notch, like the Carriage, a tantalizing offering of greens, avocado, your choice of meat or chicken, tortilla strips, and a special south of the border dressing. A full compliment of diverse appetizers round out the front half of the menu, with the entrée section offering up a wide array of sandwiches. Classics like ½ lb. hamburgers and Turkey Reubens are sure to please the traditionalists, while the skirt steak wrap and the Baja fish tacos grab the attention of the more ambitious pub grubber. There is one more item that must be touched on. The skillet cookie, the skillet cookie, oh my god, the SKILLET COOKIE! Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri 5pm-2am; Sat 11am-3am; 11am-2:30am.

Between a tattoo factory and a run-down wig shop, you will find one of Uptown’s true gems. It may not look like much from the outside, but step through the doors of The Spot and you will find yourself in a chic, hip, two-story bar that’s a mix of classy and edgy. It doesn’t matter if you bleed Cubby blue or sport the black and white pinstripes of the South Siders: the Spot welcomes fans of every team. The menu offers far more than the typical hamburger and chicken fingers. There are more sophisticated selections to please the pallet ranging from Prince Edward Island muscles, to sumptuous salads, all the way up to filets and NY strips. A personal favorite is The Perfect Chick sandwich ($8.00), a generously sized grilled chicken breast served with melted mozzarella and either Tuscan or Pesto sauce (go with the Pesto!!). The sandwich comes with a side of skinny fries in a portion size that would make the Cheesecake Factory blush. It really hits the….well, you get the idea. Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri 4pm-2am; Sat 11am-3am, Sun 11am-2am.

If you don’t feel like surfing through the mosh pit that is a Wrigleyville bar on Game Day just head over to The Spread in Lincoln Park. The bar prides itself on the upscale aura and uncommonly quirky menu – just one look at the appetizer listings and you know you’re in for a different kind of bar food experience. Fried wanton skins (Asian nachos), hummus spreads with pita chips, and curry calamari epitomize the uniqueness of The Spread. We say the steak and Portobello flatbread for $11, you may say the roasted veggie for $10, and you know what? We’d both be right! A mélange of attention-grabbing sandwiches, wraps and home made desserts round out this mouth-watering menu. Catch this baby at the perfect hour though, and you’ve got style written all over you. Come too late and you’ll be fighting for bar space with the college kids. Hours of Operation: Mon-Thu 5pm-2am; Sat 11am-3am; Sun 11am-2am.
