When you’re bored of the ho-hum club routine, tired of sitting through a super-long restaurant meal or just some funny interaction, head directly to the Improv Asylum. The North End theater has shows—the quirky, fast-paced impressive stuff of improv--Wednesday through Saturday nights. They have buckets of beer and allow you to take a bucket full of bottled beers into the theater with you. So, the improvisation becomes even more funny as the night progresses. Tickets are very reasonable, and thanks to the nature of improv, it’s a new show every time.

The Charles Playhouse has two long-running shows: Blue Man Group and Shear Madness. Even if you’ve seen both of them before, it’s fun to go here on Friday nights for karaoke and bingo and hanging out at the stylish before. And for the Blue Man and Shear Madness rookies, it’s worth going at least once to the bizarre/funny shows.

This is one of the cutest places in Boston to catch a performance. It’s got fewer than 500 seats (the Stuart Street was a former movie house from 1970 to 200) which creates an up-close-and-personal feeling with whomever’s on stage. A restaurant and bar is attached to the theater, and there are dinner packages available with the shows.
