It’s hard to decide which is the best part of the Hatch Shell: the fact that it’s free or the fact that it’s on the Charles River. Beantown’s legendary summer venue is the place to be for Fourth of July, when the Boston Pops play, for Friday night movies and for pretty much anything that happens here. Bring a picnic and get here early.

This outdoor, waterfront amphitheater would be worth hanging out at for the views alone. Then there are the performances—Morrissey, Wilco, Lou Reed, Steely Dan, Poison. All fun stuff that makes sweating through summer in the city worth it. You’d never believe it has seating for 5,000, as you can see the stage well from pretty much anywhere.

Formerly known as Great Woods, the Tweeter Center in Marshfield draws big, rocking acts and traffic-inducing crowds to its 19,900-seat amphitheater. So you get here well in advance, party in the parking lot and then go straight to the show without hassling over beers. The same acts keep coming back—Jimmy Buffett, the Allman Brothers, Rush.

The first place that U2 ever played in the U.S. was Paradise, and the place continues to host live legends in a nicely-sized space that holds 650. The Kings of Leon, Liz Phair and Louis XIV have all made the Dise rock ‘n’ roll, and current acts include Ozomatli, the Breeders and Stephen Malkmus. Open Mon 12am-1am, 6pm-1am; Tue-Sat 6pm-1am; Sun 6pm-12am

Summer has begun when this Cohasset venue begins showcasing acts like Chris Isaak, Boz Scaggs, Lyle Lovett and Tony Bennett. No, it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but since the South Shore Music Circus has limited seating, for 2,200, you know that both you and your parents can get a pretty good view of the action.
