This Allston club is just the right size to catch a band. At the Blues Festival every year, it draws big acts like Bo Diddly, but plenty of smaller, up-and-coming performers keep Harper’s Ferry nicely packed at other times, too. Everyone from Fishbone to Glenn Tillbrook of Squeeze has played here; there are there bars to help keep things flowing. Open Mon 12am-2am, 1pm-2am; Tue-Sat 1pm-2am; Sun 1pm-12am

Wally’s has been around since 1947 and has live jazz every single night of the year—365, no exceptions. It’s authentic, old-school and attracts a diverse crowd; if you can’t have a good time here, you might want to reassess your standards. Open Mon 12am-2am, 9am-2am; Tue-Sat 9am-2am; Sun 12pm-12am

This Central Square four-in-one venue is a great place to eat a falafel, drink a PBR tall boy and catch a local band—or ogle a belly dancer. Upstairs is typically the best part of the Middle East and has mostly 18-plus and all-ages shows; ZuZu is where you find he food, the Corner has the belly dancing. Downstairs, more bands. Open Mon-Wed,Sun 11am-12am; Thu-Sat 11am-1am

The first place that U2 ever played in the U.S. was Paradise, and the place continues to host live legends in a nicely-sized space that holds 650. The Kings of Leon, Liz Phair and Louis XIV have all made the Dise rock ‘n’ roll, and current acts include Ozomatli, the Breeders and Stephen Malkmus. Open Mon 12am-1am, 6pm-1am; Tue-Sat 6pm-1am; Sun 6pm-12am

Ned Devine’s, an Irish pub at Faneuil Hall, has surprisingly good live music for its location in a tourist haven. You’ll probably wait in line and pay a cover and hear about the dress code (at least in the winter months), but then you’ll check out acts like Everclear. For a change of pace, the Parris nightclub in the back has a DJ. Open Mon 12am-2am, 11am-2am; Tue-Sat 11am-2am; Sun 11am-12am
