With Irish bars now a dime a dozen in every suburban town, the Black Rose, near Quincy Market in the financial district, still stands out for its beers. Yes, there’s Guinness (served in 20-ounce pints), but lots of other stuff on tap and in bottles. You’ll find the expected—shepherd’s pie and bangers & mash—on the menu. The pints somehow taste better when you’re listening to live Irish music, which you’ll do seven nights a week here. Open Mon 12am-2am, 11:30am-2am; Tue-Fri 11:30am-2am; Sat 9am-2am; Sun 9am-12am

OK, this place is off the charts for its choices: 112 beers on tap and 380 more imports and microbrews in bottles. Don’t bring the indecisive here, who will have to wade through a 12-page beer menu before making their selections. Buffalo wings, burgers and curly fries all help to work up a thirst. The Allston hangout is more crowded than it used to be, but hey, you know there’s plenty of beer to go around. Open Mon 12am-1am, 11:30am-1am; Tue-Sat 11:30am-1am; Sun 11am-12am

A bit more upscale than some other Irish pubs around town, the Kinsale has something for everyone on its beer list: A’Chouffe and Allagash White Ale for the beer snobs, Guinness and Sierra Nevada for the old-school set. Add the 20 draft beers to the 29 available by the bottle (including Bud and Bud Light, along with four types of 22-ounce-plus biggies) and you’ve got yourself a good night. Open Mon 12am-1am, 9am-1am; Tue-Sat 9am-1am; Sun 11am-12am

This place is great for a quick bite and a few beers before the Celtics game, but get there early! Seats fill up fast for in-house brews like Boston Common or Back Bay I.P.A. Try the one with the fresh blueberries right in the pitcher. Open Mon 12am-1am, 11am-1am; Tue-Thu 11am-1am; Fri-Sat 11:30am-2am; Sun 11am-12am

Throughout the year, John Harvard’s crafts a dozen different brews, from the All American Light Lager to the Holiday Red. Just any of them are perfect to quaff while checking out the live jazz and folk performances on Sunday and Monday nights after 10 p.m. Even if the pub has been watered down by chains in places like Framingham and Pittsburgh, you can trust Geoff DeBisschop’s Old Willy India Pale Ale.

Nearly 20 taps line the wood and brass bar of this Irish watering hole, including three types of Harpoon: IPA, UFO and a monthly, rotating 100-Barrel selection. You’ll also find Boddington’s, Smithwick’s and Magners Irish cider alongside Guinness and Harp. In bottles, choose from 23 more: Magic Hat #9 to Schlitz. On Mondays, the Burren has dancing lessons; other nights feature live music. Open Mon 12am-1am, 11:30am-1am; Tue-Fri 11:30am-1am; Sat 10am-1am; Sun 10am-12am
