  • Playing For Change ~ Peace Through Music  Postal code 83713, United States

Image of Playing For Change ~ Peace Through Music
Hey Boise ~ We are hosting a FREE public screening of the "Playing For Change ~ Peace Through Music" documentary. All musicians, and non-musicians of every sort, every age, and every level of talent are welcome. This beautiful documentary is about the desire for change and bringing people together ! So please, come and share your talent, your ideas, your inspiration, and your desire for Change with us in Uniting Our Community Through Music ! The Inspiration: Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world. In the light of this wonderful movement we are hosting a " Playing For Change ~ Peace Through Music" party right here Boise Idaho ! Musicians from all over the world are being brought together to perform benefit concerts that build music and art schools in communities that are in need of inspiration and hope. In addition to benefit concerts, the Playing for Change band also performs shows around the world. When audiences see and hear musicians who have traveled thousands of miles from their homes, united in purpose and chorus on one stage, everyone is touched by music's unifying power. Everyone can participate in this transformative experience by joining the Playing for Change Movement. http://www.playingforchange.com/ Fans are spreading the message of Playing for Change through our media, and this is only the beginning. Together, we will connect the world through music ! After the screening we will be having an Open floor Jam session for you ALL to participate in. There are two songs that we will absolutely be playing. 1 ~ One love: by Bob Marley 2 ~ Stand by me: by Ben E. King I will have the words to both songs printed up along with sheet music if you need it. If you would like it before hand, just let me know and I will send it to you. After that it's all up to you ! We can play whatever you desire to share with us. Don't worry if you don't know how to play an instrument, there will be plenty of opportunities of fun for everyone ! There will be some snacks, but this will also be a potluck style gathering. So please feel free to bring something to eat, preferably finger foods, and share with others. We will have water available. If you can bring a cup, no glass please, that would be great ! Please bring something soft to sit on for the movie. To make room for everyone we will not have chairs in the room. this is the Facebook link to the event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=153835438220&ref=mf

ABOUT VPS IDAHO: The Vinyl Preservation Society of Idaho is an independent social recreation enterprise dedicated to communal listening enjoyment.

VPS Idaho has three main charters: preservation, education and entertainment. By actively promoting the preservation of the vinyl record as a medium, VPS Idaho hopes to play a small part in ensuring the enduring presence and future vitality of this unique and culturally rich musical format. In its educational efforts, VPS Idaho hopes to increase the knowledge of group members as well as the general public in all matters related to analog musicology, from record production techniques and the performance and maintenance of associated electronics to the history of vinyl in Idaho and beyond. In pursuing its entertainment goals, VPS Idaho simply hopes to help existing vinyl aficionados discover and enjoy more music while cultivating a wider community of new listeners; in short, to keep the records spinning and the music alive.

Monthly meetings (held every fourth Wednesday of the month) include guest speakers and DJs, opportunities to buy, sell and trade vinyl and, of course, a chance to share some of your favorite albums with fellow music geeks and vinyl junkies. Membership is free and open to anyone who listens to music of any kind. While members and guests don’t have to own any vinyl, it is assumed they at least have an interest in and appreciation for vinyl as ONLY VINYL RECORDS WILL BE PLAYED AT MEETINGS.

A Survey of Gee's Bend Quilts

    October 10, 2009 - January 17, 2010

Hailed by the New York Times as some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced, the abstract quilts from the tiny, isolated African-American community of Gee's Bend, Alabama, prompted a rethinking of commonly accepted artistic categories. Throughout much of the twentieth century, making quilts was considered a domestic responsibility for the African-American women in Gee's Bend, an area of Rehoboth and Boykin, Alabama. As young girls, many of the women trained or apprenticed in their craft with their mothers, female relatives, or friends. Women with large families often made dozens upon dozens of quilts over the course of their lives. Organized by Tinwood Media and the Boise Art Museum, the exhibition will feature 25 quilts created between 1940 - 2006, as well as 20 contemporary prints inspired by the quilts created by several of the Gee's Bend artists.

  • Image of Alley Repertory Theater Presents: Three Tall Women by Edward Albee
    Ages: 21+

Three Tall Women. Nov. 5-21 (Thursdays-Saturdays) @ VaC. Preview: Nov. 5, opening night: Nov. 6. Doors 7pm, show 8 pm. $15 (rush tickets available). Tickets on sale 10/26/09 @ http://www.visualartscollective.com In Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical work, we meet three tall women navigating through the elusiveness of personality and its self-deceptions. Through a stingingly funny and often haunting, unsettling conversation in act one, we witness the collision of a young lawyer, a middle-aged caregiver and a rich, bitter elderly matron who have little patience for one another, and who talk in circles to make-or avoid-any kind of connection. In act two, their true identities are revealed, and the illusion of separateness takes a surprising, and illuminating, turn. Directed by Tim Saunders. An Alley Mainstage production.

NEW NAME & NEW PRACTICE Dharmata Boise Sangha has been under the umbrella of Heart of the Dharma. For the sack of simplicity we are now using only the Heart of the Dharma name for all activities. In addition, we have made changes to the Sunday practices. We will now have a less formal approach to the practice leaving behind many of the rituals and chanting we have done in the past. These changes are based on the desire to meet the needs of the local community of practitioners and those new to the practice. The ritual is not the practice. Looking into ourselves is the real practice which requires nothing more than sitting and resting in the natural state of awareness. We meet weekly to meditate together and support one another on the path to inner freedom. Sundays 11- 12:30 & Tuesdays - MEDITATION CLASSES 7:00- 8:00PM Location: 2912 Pleasanton Ave. Boise, ID 83702 The practice is for those who are new to meditation as well as long time practitioners. Heart of the Dharma offers meditation and teachings to assist those who have an interest in overcoming their suffering and living with inner peace. Dana Marsh is the teacher for Heart of the Dharma. She has spent many years meditating and studying the dharma and has twenty-five years of teaching experience. She was ordained by Anam Thubten in the Dharmata Lineage, she teaches others how to meditate based on the transcendent wisdom that relieves all beings from suffering. She is the founder of Heart of the Dharma, Inc. offerring retreats, weekly meditation practices, and classes. www.heartofdharma.org Contact: boisesangha@gmail.com
