Birmingham is where it all started for Zoe’s Kitchen, and you can never beat the original. The focus of the menu is fresh, healthy food and Greek favorites. The focus of the people is friendly. The Diplomat has been serving gourmet sandwiches in Vestavia for 20 years and is the go-to spot for the best reuben in town. They also sell the area’s largest selection of imported beer and usually have some good sports going on the TV’s. The muffaletta and the senator are also a reason to scope this place out. Get on it. Hours of Operation: Mon-Thurs 9 a.m.- 8 p.m., Fri-Sat 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sun 11:30 a.m.- 3 p.m.

An institution in Mountain Brook Village. The old-fashioned drugstore is famous for their fresh-squeezed limeades but really everything on the menu is delicious. Kick it old-school at the counter with an egg salad sandwich and a shake. Hours of Operation: Mon- Fri 8 a.m. to “quarter ‘o five” and Sat 8:30 a.m. to again, “quarter ‘o five.”

We don’t just go back to Bottletree around noon the next day to close our tab-we go to get some healthy grub. This Downtown café/bar/live music venue is decorated with bottles, naturally, and has great indie energy. Order the Cajun sweet potato fries, chill out with a board game, and don’t be ashamed if you can’t control tapping your foot to the great beats they have playing. The menu is very vegetarian-friendly and includes wraps, sandwiches, hummus plate, tacos, and quesadillas. You don’t have to twist our arm to order more than one thing- bring on the soy sour cream. Free Wi-Fi and they know what time happy hour really should start- 3 p.m. And that it should last for 5 hours-very sneaky. Hours of Operation: Café 11a.m.-10 p.m. Mon-Sat/ Bar: Open late.
