The year is 1938. It’s Saturday night in Mount Pleasant, NC, and the Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders Family Singers to provide an upliftin’ evening of singin’ and witnessin'. The audience is invited to pull up a pew and join in the rollicking good time. More than two dozen songs, many of them vintage pop hymns, and hilarious stories from the more or less devout Sanders provide a richly entertaining evening that has audiences clapping, singing and laughing and cheering.

  • Image of Southeastern Outings Service Trip on the Vulcan Trail
Enjoy assisting to clear undergrowth along the Vulcan Trail on Red Mountain in Birmingham

You are invited to join Dan Frederick for a few hours on a work trip on the Vulcan Trail in Birmingham. We will be clearing a portion of this trail for the SEO dayhike scheduled for Saturday, November 28. The trail is level, so walking on the trail is easy.

The first mile of the trail is paved and cleared. After that the trail has some undergrowth which needs to be cleared. The unpaved section of the trail (about one mile) was previously cleared thoroughly in November, 2007.

Please bring gloves and pruning tools with you, both hand pruning shears and long-handled shears if you have them. If you own several shears, please bring all of them as some of our helpers may not own shears and still want to be of assistance. If five or six people take part in this service trip, our clearance work will take a minimum amount of time.

Please meet promptly at 1:00 p.m. in the very small parking lot on the west side of 20th Street South right where 20th Street crosses the crest of Red Mountain. This lot is immediately below the Vulcan statue. Please do NOT drive into Vulcan Park where you would normally park to visit the statue and Vulcan Park. No children on this trip, please.

If you intend to come on this service trip November 22, please call Dan Frederick, 631-4680, or email him at seoutings@bellsouth.net ahead of time. And thank you!

    DESCRIPTION OF SOUTHEASTERN OUTINGS
Do you wish you had friends who share your active lifestyle and enjoyment of outdoor activities? Then become active with Southeastern Outings (SEO), a new nonprofit organization committed and created to serve people who enjoy being active in the outdoors. The organization plans, organizes and leads outings such as dayhikes, easy canoe trips, stream and waterfall walks, tube floats, bicycle rides, lake events and other fun activities to beautiful sites in our natural environment. From time to time we also sponsor potluck suppers and other socials. All events and activities of the group are open to the public. Participating in SEO activities is a splendid, simple way to make congenial new friends who enjoy the outdoors. No dogs or smoking allowed, please.

The organization currently has over three hundred fifty members. We scheduled seventy-one events in the twelve months ending December 31, 2008, for an average of six fun events per month. We enjoy the outdoors in all seasons throughout the year. Twenty-nine people, on average, have participated in each outing since January 1, 2009.

SEO does not charge for participation in any of its outings. You do not have to be a member to participate in SEO activities. Dues are only $10. Please contact Dan Frederick, President, 205-631-4680, or seoutings@bellsouth.net for more information and to obtain three free monthly newsletters with membership application and a complete description of all our outdoor events. Thank you.
