UAA Mainstage Theatre, Fine Arts Building Room 220
    November 20 - December 6, 2009

Call 786-4TIX or go to CenterTix.net

The University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Theatre and Dance is delighted to present Christmas Belles, a new holiday classic and part of the wildly popular Futrelle sister trilogy of plays by playwrights Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. Christmas Belles will be performed in the Main Stage Theatre of the UAA Fine Arts Building Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. from November 20th through December 6th, 2009. Ticket prices are $10.00-$18.00 regular, and $7.00-$10.00 with discount (UAA student with current ID) by phone at 786-4849 or online at CenterTix.net. Set in Fayro, Texas (population 3,003), Christmas Belles tells the tale of a Christmas Pageant gone wild and is suitable for all ages. In this play, a well-intentioned holiday program spins out of control when squabbling siblings, a vengeful sheep, family secrets, a surly Santa and a reluctant Elvis impersonator collide - and food poisoning suddenly "Decks the Halls." This hilarious but heart warming struggle over a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve brings "Joy to the World" to more than 100 live theatres across the nation this holiday season. And for good reason according to reviewer Dick Kerekes, "'if you enjoy frivolity and hilarity, and want something to bail you out of the Christmas blues, Christmas Belles will punch your ticket" and playwright Wooten says, "Unless you are dead, you're gonna laugh." In Christmas Belles the Futrelle sisters try to maintain a festive mood as they prepare for the town Christmas Pageant. Frankie is overdue with her second set of twins, Honey Raye is a bundle of nerves, and Twink has been doing time in jail for a little mishap with a bonfire and her newly ex-boyfriend's collectibles. Add to the mayhem an ailing Santa, a vengeful sheep, a reluctant Elvis impersonator, and a family secret that emerges that just might derail the entire production. On top of everything else, for the first time in Fayro history, the pageant will be shown live on cable access television. Hope and Jones were both raised in Texas and all three co-writers grew up in communities with disastrous church pageants that everyone pretended were "great!" Combining real personalities and real life pageant disasters, they elevate their tale to a gut busting drama that you can't help but watch, relate to, and enjoy. Jones, Hope and Wooten are enjoying the reputation of the most widely produced living comedic playwrights in America as well as the "dynamic new comedic voices of the American theatre." Their reputation is well deserved: Wooten's credits include writing and producing more than 400 episodes aired on network television, including four seasons of the classic series "The Golden Girls"; Hope is an award winning playwright; and Jones co-authored both Dearly Departed the play, and its adaptation for screen Kingdom Come. All three cherish their Southern heritage, through their works recalling the Southern lifestyle before the immigration of big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target and America's relative homogenization.

  • Cinema Nondualite': Breaking the Waves  Postal code 99501, United States
    6:15 PM
Image of Cinema Nondualite': Breaking the Waves
Next meeting of Cinema Nondualite': Breaking the Waves. Saturday, Nov. 21 God told me to do it. IÂÂ'm not sure why IÂÂ've chosen this film for our next gathering of Cinema Nondualité. I have only a vague recollection of the movie, which I saw some 15 years ago. But God told me to do it. Must be; thatÂÂ's the only logical explanation. I mean, why else does anybody do anything? Except maybe for love. Which may be the same thing. Must be something like that. After all, this is not an easy movie. Not a movie with a simple explanation or prepackaged moral. The labyrinths of mind are truly endless in their self-reinforcing loops, and thereÂÂ's no way out. Truly: no way out. WeÂÂ're no different from Bess McNeill: God is always telling us to do it. Yet the creative act of portraying nothing less than this universal predicament is marvelous and astounding, and thatÂÂ's precisely the goal Breaking the Waves strives to fulfill. Or something. Come join us for another evening of oceanic submersion. Perhaps weÂÂ'll even break the waves before itÂÂ's over. What: Breaking the Waves (Emily Watson in her remarkable, Oscar-nominated film debut, directed by Lars Von Trier). No violence this time, but some possibly disturbing sexual images. When: Saturday, November 21. Light Potluck at 6:15, movie at 7:15. Discussion to follow. Where: Scott & JuliaÂÂ's: 3303 Checkmate Drive: Off Boniface between East Northern Lights and Tudor. Turn west off Boniface onto Emmanuel Avenue, then right (North) onto Checkmate. End of short cul-de-sac. -- OR -- Turn off Tudor directly on to Checkmate Drive and go north to the cul-de-sac. Questions: Call Moss, 332-0388

The local community council (the Northeast Community Council) is hosting the Muldoon Park Strip gathering to inform folks about the proposed Muldoon Park Strip Plan. A park Strip from Muldoon Road to the Military fence along Chester Creek. Trying to drum up support you might say. After the short gathering we'll be going for a hike to see the proposed Park Strip Site. There is a surprisingly large beaver dam and slippery trail. A class A hike I suspect. Bring the kids. 6:00 AM
Image of Hillside trails - Walk w/ or w/o dogs
WHAT: Brisk morning walk to get a good start on the day and for those with dogs, to get Fido her/his exercise. As long as there is not enough snow to ski we can continue to use the lighted loop trails. When ski season gets here we will be moved sideways to the multi-purpose trails or the single track trails for those who bring dogs. We will see if mornings stay dog walks or morph into skiing. WHEN: 6 AM meeting. We'll keep it short enough to be gone by 7 or even a few minutes before if participants want. Be there a minute or 2 BEFORE 6 AM so we can start no later than 1-2 minutes after the hour. WHERE: Meet at the uphill end of the Abbott Road --- Lighted Loop Trails parking lot, about 1.2 miles uphill of Service High. DETAILS: - South Anch location for short, BRISK morning walk. Do not let "brisk" fool you -- come on out. We can adjust the pace as need be. - Temperature is dropping some but still do not over-dress; dress lightly &/or in layers. BRING: - Ski/ trekking poles (if you like them) - Water - Small pack to shed layers into as you warm up - Headlamp (optional and we may not ever use them, even in December but if you want it . . . .) DOGS: Dogs are OK. Be sure to bring doggie pick-up bags. There is a some chance we will encounter wildlife. A leash may be handy. CONTACT: Doug Van Etten 244-6610

Image of THE MOTHER OF ALL THANKSGIVING DINNERS - Open House
************************************* HOSTED BY TOM SUTHERLAND - Thanks, Tom!!! ************************************* Tom has upped the limit to SEVENTY-FIVE and moved the start time up to 2:00pm, allowing for more of a drop-in event for folks who have multiple events to visit on this day. Please include in your RSVP what you will be bringing for the feast. Bring whatever beverage you would like to drink, plus a dish to share. We'd like to have a well-rounded Thanksgiving feast so take a look at what's been spoken for and see what you can fill in. With a large group, duplicates are welcome so each person isn't shooting to feed 75 people with their dish. We have one person who will be providing a turkey so far, but with 75 people I'd daresay we'll need at least two turkeys, maybe a ham... and perhaps some non-meat main dishes for any vegetarians coming. Take a loook at this list, off the top of my head for a 'traditional' Thanksgiving dinner. But of course, feel free to make/bring whatever inspires you. Turkey Ham Mashed potatoes Sweet potatoes Stuffing Cranberry sauce Sour cream Gravy Green Beans Peas Dinner rolls Salad Looking forward to seeing you! For any questions, please call Tom: 223-9253

Daily, dawn to dusk. Trail is rated 2. The route is a 10km (6.2 miles) walk along trails and streets circling Lake Hood Seaplane Base, the largest seaplane base in the world. The trail passes through general aviation areas at the Anchorage International Airport. Walkers are cautioned to watch out for aircraft and stay clear of aircraft parking, taxiing and runway locations. The route continues to Earthquake Park, a site commemorating the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, with great views of the Cook Inlet, Mt. Susistna, and Mt. McKinely. Although an easy walk along bike paths and streets, this route may be difficult for wheelchairs and strollers due to the lack of sidewalks and narrow shoulders on many streets. Dogs are welcome, but must be on leash.
