We are talking about New Mexican food here, which differs significantly from the Mexican cuisine served up by our neighboring states of Arizona and Texas! You are in red and green chile territory. The state legislature voted to declare “Red or green?” the official state question a few years back! So be prepared to answer that question or just say “Christmas” and you will get both! This place is located in the historic Barelas neighborhood, one of the oldest continually occupied areas in the city. (Albuquerque recently celebrated it’s Tricentennial) For over thirty years Barelas Coffee House has been serving the residents as well as the famous (seems to be a must stop place for presidents, wanna-a-be’s and stars of local and national fame!) authentic, delicious and fresh breakfast and lunch New Mexican style! Expect crowds! Hours –Mon-Fri, 7:30am-3pm Sat, 7:30am-2:30pm

Another Sneaky Sunday favorite with three locations in town, this place rocks the Carne Adovada! (lean pork marinated in red chile sauce) We think it’s (almost) better than our mama’s! Also recommend their fajitas or any combo plate which will treat you to the many flavors that create the distinctive New Mexican cuisine. And your fingers will be sticky by the time you finish your meal with complimentary sopaipillas and honey. (odd but addictive hollow, deep fried, pillow shaped concoctions you drizzle with honey!) Hours – Daily 11am-9pm

If you are in the Old Town area of Albuquerque you’ll want to check out this spot located inside an old adobe home – it’s comfy, homey and a charmer as far as authentic ambiance goes! Generations of New Mexican family food tradition goes into Monica’s menu offerings here! (yes, there is an actual Monica) You’ll be making tough decisions again like choosing between enchiladas, rellenos, green chile stew, tacos and naturally the perennial question – red or green – if you answer “Christmas” you’ll get both - and if your taste buds are still virgins - have it on the side - so you can take it slow! Hours – Tues-Fri, 9am-9pm Sat 9am-3pm Sun 9am-3pm

A Sneaky Sunday top pick because only the most well informed and sneaky would know to go to an actual pharmacy to get filled up on some of the best New Mexican chow around! It’s location on Route 66 is a clue that it’s as cool as the food is hot! It’s small, it’s crowded and it’s got all the ambiance you would expect from a place you can get your legal drugs, band-aids, greeting cards and so on! Overlooking that, check out the home made flour tortillas – so good you may want to just make a meal out of them! Try their stuffed sopaipillas which are sometimes a special or order the combo plate to sample several distinctly unique New Mexican food flavors! Hours – Mon-Fri, 9am-6:30 Sat 9am-2pm
